Not Only Refrigerators Can Preserve Eggs — Storing Them in These Places Keeps Them Fresh for a Long Time

Eggs are a familiar, highly nutritious, and very convenient food. You can usually buy 10-20 eggs or more at a time to use gradually. Eggs cook quickly, making them a popular ingredient for busy families. Typically, people store eggs in the refrigerator’s cold compartment, but there are other simple and practical ways to keep eggs fresh that don’t take up fridge space. Let’s take a look!
Using Newspaper
Newspaper not only helps prevent eggs from breaking but also keeps them fresh longer. Wipe the eggs clean with a soft tissue, then wrap each egg individually with crumpled newspaper. Place the eggs in a basket with good ventilation and keep it in a dry place. This method helps eggs stay fresh for about 1-2 months without refrigeration.
Storing Eggs in Rice
This is an easy method using ingredients readily available at home. Prepare a container, spread a layer of rice at the bottom, then place the eggs in it with the smaller end facing down. The rice helps isolate the eggs from the air, extending their shelf life. Store the container in a cool, ventilated place and check occasionally to ensure the eggs are still good.
Storing Eggs in Rice Bran
Rice bran is an ideal material for long-term egg storage. Prepare a jar or box, spread a thick layer of rice bran at the bottom, then layer the eggs on top. Sprinkle a layer of rice bran between each layer of eggs. After finishing, cover the top with one final layer of rice bran. Keep the container in a cool, airy place. With this method, eggs can stay fresh for about 4 to 6 months.
Using Cooking Oil
Cooking oil is also an effective method to preserve eggs. To do this, prepare a small bowl of cooking oil and use a small brush to apply a thin layer of oil onto the cleaned eggshell surface. The oil creates a barrier between the egg and the air, preventing moisture and bacteria from entering. Using this method, eggs can be stored at temperatures between 25 to 32°C (77 to 89.6°F) for 30-36 days without refrigeration.
Using Wood Ash
This method is suitable for households that have wood ash from wood stoves or plant ash. If you live in the city, you can ask for wood ash from others when needed. Prepare some ash in a clean jar, then place the eggs inside and cover with another layer of ash on top. With this method, eggs can stay fresh for about 3 months. If you don’t have ash, dry sand can be used as a substitute.
Storing Eggs with Dry Tea Leaves
This method makes use of dry tea leaves after brewing. Keep the tea leaves and dry them completely. When storing, layer the dry tea leaves alternately with the eggs, then keep the container in a dry, ventilated place. This method helps eggs stay fresh for 2-3 months.
