It is 9:00 a.m. in Idaho Falls, Idaho, where police respond to a welfare check for a woman who concerned parties said was unreachable after failing to show up for work.

"Hey Phil." "Yeah." "How are you doing?" "Good."

"Good. Can we come in and talk for a minute? I'm Officer Jenkins. Okay. We're here to talk to Kaylin. Where is she at?"

"Yeah, I think I don't Hold on." "Where is she at? Where is Kaylin at?" "I think there's... I think that I heard her."

"You think you heard her?" "I don't know if I heard her." "Okay. Well, I don't."

"I don't know. I don't know what they were doing then. Something. Not sure." "Is this your phone, buddy?"

"Yeah." "Okay. Go ahead and just leave it right there for me." "Okay." "So, uh when was the last time you saw Kaylin?"

"Uh two nights ago, I think." "Two nights ago?" "Mhm." "Where was that at?"

"Here." "Here?"

Inside, police meet 33-year-old Philip Schwab, who lived in the home owned by his mother and was the boyfriend of the missing woman, 33-year-old Kaylin Blue.

"Okay. So, where should she be?"

"I don't know. In the garbage can? I don't know. On top of it." "Is anybody else here?"

"Uh just my mom." "Your mom's here?" "Yeah." "Okay. Kaylin lives in the backyard?"

"I'm just looking in the backyard." "Where would Kaylin be if she's in the house?" "Uh uh downstairs." "Downstairs?"

"Yeah, probably." "Okay, we'll follow you down there." "Any weapons in the home we should be aware about?" "Uh we have the knives in the kitchen. I think that's it."

"any firearms or anything?" "No." "Okay." "I think I think she's outside, though."

"You think Kaylin's outside?" "Yeah." "What makes you think that?" "Uh my shoes had dirt on them, but I didn't do anything like that."

"Your shoes did?" "Yes." "So, this is her room?" "Yes, our room."

"Okay, you guys share?" "Mhm. All her stuff's here." "And you saw her 2 days ago?" "Yes, sir."

"Okay, whose phone is this right here?" "That's hers." "This is her phone? Can I look at it?" "Yeah."

"So, for sure this one's hers?" "Yes, sir." "Does she normally not take her phone?" "No, she always usually takes it."

"Okay. May we look in the closet?" "Yeah."

A series of alarming text messages revealed that Philip's mother called police after Philip allegedly told her Kaylin was " gone. While her belongings remained at the home.

"So, the last time you saw her was 2 days ago?" "Mhm." "Okay." "And then I thought she was at work."



"Can I look in this room?" "I had a blackout. Yeah. All my snacks and stuff." "Can I open this up?"

"Mhm." "Is it blood?" "Yeah." "So, you haven't seen her for 2 days?"

"Yeah, and everybody started calling and I woke up and I was kind of shocked. She always calls." "So, who have you been calling?" "I haven't been calling anything." "I thought you said you started calling."

"I tried calling them back and figuring out what happened, but." "Who's them?" "Uh my mom and her friends at work." "Okay. And so, they would know what happened or Well, what do you mean what happened?"

"I don't know. Nothing. And I'm on medication for my back." "Okay." "Mhm."

"I guess that's." "She had She had um pain and anxiety and we would have these spells at night like fighting like we would both wake up and be attacking, so." "Be attacking each other?" "Mhm."

"Okay. Did that happen recently?" "I think so. I think I." "What When did that happen?"

"Uh I think probably like 2 years ago." "can we check the whole house for her?" "Yeah."

"Is that okay? Just hang tight with us. How about you show us where." "things are?" "Okay."

"What rooms we're going into?" "Uh this is the storage."

"Storage? All right, hang tight. Hang tight. Let me look through here." "okay"

"What's." "just pat you down real quick. Make sure you don't have any weapons. Go ahead and turn your face that door." "Should I leave it?"

"Hold on. Hold on. All right. Turn around. Can you put your hands in the small of your back for me real quick? There you go."

"What's that?" "Some stain on the carpet, some soda or Uh earlier tonight." "Tonight what happened?" "I think I did it."

"You did that?"

The officer points to a suspicious stain on the carpet one of many investigators would later discover throughout the house.

"I think I heard her." "You think you heard her?" "Yeah, earlier than that probably." "Okay, where where is Kaylin at?"

"Uh like I think outside." "You think outside?" "I walked out and my shoes were all muddy." "Your shoes were all muddy? And you went outside or you were wearing your shoes or."

"Yeah, there's stains all over this carpet coming up. Hopefully they are. So where's Kaylin at?" "Uh..."

"Is she in there? She's in the ground? You buried her? Okay. All right, go and turn around, put your hands behind your back."

"Where is your mom?" "I think she's at the hospital." "72, we got one detained. 95, if you're clear, you don't want to head this way."

In a corner of the backyard, police found Kaylin dead in a shallow grave in the backyard, according to a case report. But, that's not all. Investigators also found muddy footprints leading to and from the burial site, along with shovels that police said carried possible trace evidence.

"10-4 58, if you're clear. Go ahead this way." "I'm going to call 58."

"Okay. Um have a seat right here, bud, for me. So, I'm going to I'm going to read you your rights, okay, bud?" "Yep."

"Okay, you have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in court. You have the right to an attorney to have an attorney present. If you can't afford one, one will be appointed to represent you. You can decide at any point to exercise these rights and not answer any questions. Do you understand your rights, sir?"

"Yes." "All right, so how did how do you think you hurt What what's your girlfriend's name?" "Kaylin." "Kaylin?"

"Kaylin." "Kaylin. How do you think you hurt her?" "Um I probably stabbed her, I think."

"You stabbed her, you think? Where's the knife?" "I don't know which one I used. There was a one downstairs. There's besides the kitchen one."

"The kitchen ones?" "Mhm." "Okay. So, you know which kitchen knife you used?" "I don't remember exactly."

Philip later told police he used a Buck hunting knife against his girlfriend and later used a kitchen knife against the family's two dogs. Investigators recovered both alleged weapons and said the animals were later found in the home's garage.

"10-4. 72 on 2. When did this fight happen?"

"Day before. Yesterday, probably. Cuz yesterday I was." "We're still trying to sort this out."

"Uh he's claiming girlfriend's buried in the back. And uh he stabbed her, so possibly murder." "I don't even know. I woke up and she was gone."

"All right, affirm, we're still trying to get this figured out if you'll stand by. He's detained for the time being. Have you confirmed she's in there? Have you confirmed that she's in there?" "I It's her."

"It's her for sure? When did you bury her? Was it that same day or day after?" "like panicked and didn't know what else to do." "So, why did you stab her, bud?"

"I think it was self-defense, but." "Self-defense?" "We were both We both had medications. She had anxiety." "Uh-huh."

"And she would wake up kicking in the middle of the night and hitting me and." "Okay. So, she woke up in the middle of the night and she was hitting you, then what happened?" "And then I think I just stabbed her." "How did you get the knife if there's only knives in the kitchen?"

"I did have one downstairs that I found. I could show you." "Okay, we'll look at it here in a second. So, was that the knife then, the one downstairs?" "Uh probably."

"Okay. So, where where did this happen?" "Um I think it started downstairs or in the second floor and." "Started up here in the kitchen?" "I It probably started downstairs and then."

"Okay." "Going downstairs." "Okay. So you say you take medications for what?"

"Uh a lot of stuff. I go in and then out of these episodes, too. So." "Mhm."

"Mostly... yeah." "What are they?" "I can't remember." "Do you do anything Do you mix it with anything else?"

"No." "No alcohol or anything like that?"

"I quit drinking. I was I was drinking. Like but that and smoking. That's why I quit the drinking though cuz of the spell. And I've been I was in and out of mental institute before, too."

"Mhm. How long were you dating Is it Kaylin?" "Kaylin? Uh 4 years almost."

"4 years? How long were you guys living together?" "Uh about 5 years, I think."

Philip told investigators in a later interview that sometime between midnight and 2:00 a.m. on June 23rd, 2019, he had attacked Kaylin in the basement bedroom they shared after he said she started "thrashing around in her sleep causing him to panic and attack her.

"So you guys started dating 4 years ago but were together 5 years, am I." "I would we we've been together about 5 years. We started dating right away." "Mhm. And then you've been living together the same amount of time?"

"Pretty much." "Yeah." "Just about. Yeah, we probably moved in together with like 2 years after we started."

"Okay. Let me get your information, man. Make sure I've got your information down right. I'm not sure if the other officer."

"My mom has all the medical stuff. I can't remember." "Fair enough. All right, what's your name, sir?"

"Uh Philip. One L."

The officer finishes gathering Philip's information before questioning continues.

"So, you guys started dating 4 years ago, but were together 5 years. Am I." "I would say we've been together about 5 years. We started dating right away."

"Mhm. And then you've been living together the same amount of time?" "Pretty much." "Yeah."

"Just about. Yeah, we probably moved in together with like 2 years after we started."

"Okay. So, when did this happen? You said a couple nights ago? You know what day it is today?" "No, I don't."

"Today's Monday the 24th. When did this happen?" "Uh Either yesterday or the day before, I guess." "Which day?"

"I was out. I was sleeping most of that." "So, when did it happen? The day before?" "I think so."

"So, would have been what? Saturday?" "Saturday night." "What time roughly?" "Uh..."

"I'm not sure." "You don't know exactly what time?" "No." "Was it early in the morning Saturday?"

"later." "So, Saturday night into Sunday morning?" "I think." "What time roughly?"

"Uh..." "I'm in the backyard of the subject." "Um maybe." "Two, I guess. That's right."

"About 2:00 a.m.?" "Mhm." "So, it was actually Sunday morning then?" "No."

"What's that?" "That's right." "Yeah. About 2:00 a.m. you said?"

"Yes." "Roughly?" "I guess about anywhere between midnight or two, somewhere around there." "Okay."

"I just remember two." "Okay. So, you remember stabbing her. How many times did you stab her?" "I'm not sure."

"Was it a hundred?" "No." "How many roughly?" "Five."

"Five times?"

Philip estimated that he attacked Kaylin about five times, but the autopsy documented many more wounds to her head, neck, and chest.

"Were they all in the front, or was it the back?" "I'm not sure. I think upper parts,."

"Upper? Upper torso? Was it the front or the back?" "Yeah, in the front and like the neck and head, I think." "Neck and head?"

"Mhm." "Okay. So, where were you guys at when it happened?" "Downstairs."

"Where were you at when it happened? Downstairs, upstairs?" "Downstairs, yeah." "Downstairs?" "Downstairs in the bedroom, and we were freaking out and."

"So, it started in the bedroom?" "Yeah." "Okay." "And I don't know what happened. I panicked and freaked out and."

"Did she have any weapons on her?" "No." "No?" "But she did She fought sometimes."

"So, why did you have a a knife in the bedroom?" "I had grabbed it in the basement." "In the basement somewhere? Okay. And you'll you'll show us where that's at?"

"Yeah." "Okay. So, I've read uh Mr. Philip his Miranda rights." "You already told him his Miranda rights?"

"Yeah." "Okay." "Um He says he's pretty sure she." "Affirm, come over here and help with the perimeter."

"She's buried right there." "Okay." "He says this happened uh Sunday around 2:00 a.m. Um he takes medication."

"I do. I also quit a lot of them, and I quit drinking." "It's not uncommon for them to wake up startled and kind of go after each other." "Wake up and..." "And who is she that's What's her name?"

"Caitlin M. Blue." "Caitlin?" "And that's you've been living together for 4 years, say 5 years about?" "About."

"As long as you've been dating?" "Okay." "And uh he said he's stabbed her about probably about five times." "Yeah. And."

"I quit a lot of medications." "You quit them before Saturday or Sunday?" "Yeah. And I quit a bunch of them." "Okay."

"So, Neck, head uh He says he'll show us where the knife is at." "Okay." "And right now I'm only on... I think."

"Okay. Do you want to show us where that knife is, Philip?" "Uh yes." "I have it."

"Okay, you're ready? One, two, three. Up you go. Okay, let's help you inside." "Yeah, that's why I quit all those meds and drinking and had those blackouts and."

"Okay. Did he ask you where this happened?" "Yeah, I think it started probably started downstairs and then it's not uncommon down." "Okay." "I had one that I think it's downstairs."

"The knife is downstairs or the Okay, so the knife is downstairs?" "Yeah." "Okay, we'll just wait until detectives get here. We'll take you out for him then. So all everything happened downstairs in a basement uh bedroom, is that right?"

"Yes." "Do you guys sleep in that bedroom together?" "Yes, we do." "Okay. All right."

"This is your room up here, right?" "Yes, sir." "Okay." "Okay, we're going to go just out this front door and we'll put you in a police car. Do you need anything before we go, Philip?"

"I'd just like something for pain if it's possible." "Um I'll look for that. Where do I find that?" "Uh Mom keeps them in her room."

"Okay, is this your mom? Kaylin is your mom?" "No, no." "Oh, I'm sorry. Okay, so your mom lives here, too?"

"Yes. Yes, her house." "Okay, where's your mom?" "Uh..."

"Okay. Okay. And is Kaylin your girlfriend?" "Yes."

"Okay. So, where's mom's room?" "Down the hall."

"Down the hall? Okay, we'll look for that in just a bit. Um is there anything else that we can get for you?" "Uh just the pain would be okay."

"Okay. That's okay." "I'm not sure. We're not doctors, so I don't know that we can administer that, but we'll try to figure that out, okay?" "It's okay."

"We're going to have you go to Officer Hernandez's car. Okay? And I will keep this secure until we get this taken care of, okay?" "Okay." "There's nobody else or no animals in here?"

"No, ma'am." "Okay." "Head this way out. To the left."

In the days leading up to and following Kaylin's stabbing death, Philip allegedly sent concerning text messages to his mother with one reading quote, "It's going to be over soon." And another reading quote, "I'm ready to have fun with you." He also allegedly posted hundreds of alarming Facebook statuses alluding to stabbing, killing, and death. With one post, investigators said was his final one before carrying out the crime that read, quote, "If stabbing people is wrong, I don't want to be right." That post was followed by hundreds more, including one that read, "Good thing I have a get out of jail free card." Philip was charged with first-degree murder.

"So, Jessica is going to go and get her She's going to have you just move your car." "Okay." "Over here. So, I'll hang out with him. She'll move, and then we'll have you switch."

"Oh, okay. He got the keys. Okay, I'm going to go."

"No, you don't have to go through this. I guess 530 is here now. Should we just put him in his car?"

"Okay. Hold on. You're all right. We're going to put you in the back of his car. All right, bud. Have a seat."

Court records show his so-called "get out of jail free card" did him no favors. The 33-year-old later pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced to 25 years to life behind bars.
