It was the safe speech. The gracious one, with the meatloaf joke and the poster quote. He looked at it for a long moment — long enough that Boone almost stepped in again — and then he folded it back up, slow and deliberate, and set it down on the podium's narrow shelf, face-down, like something he was finished with.

"I'm ready," he said. "But I'm not giving that speech anymore."

He said it into the microphone. Everybody heard the echo of Whitfield's own words in his mouth, and understood, all at once, exactly what he meant by it.

"Good evening," Julian said, and his voice — steady now, steadier than it had any right to be — filled the gymnasium the way it was always supposed to have filled it. "My name is Julian Cross. Ten minutes ago, somebody stood right here and told me I wasn't the right face for this school. I want to start by saying — she's right about one thing. I'm not the face anybody expected to be standing here.

"I'm the kid whose mom worked doubles so I could stay in AP Chem instead of getting an after-school job we needed the money from. I'm the kid who did his homework under a gas station streetlight for two weeks last winter because our power got shut off and I didn't want anybody at school to know. I'm not the kid on the brochure. I know that. I've known that since I got here.

"But I'm also the kid who's going to Georgetown in the fall on a full ride. I'm the kid with the 4.6 GPA. I'm the kid three of my AP teachers wrote letters for, unprompted, because they said I earned every single point of it, no curve, no favors, no exceptions made for me — which, funny enough, is more than I can say for how this school has made exceptions for other people plenty of times before."
