"Wait!" Alicia called after him.

But Elijah kept walking, his heart hammering in his chest.

That evening, Elijah sat on his bed with Dell's book open before him, losing himself in the words and music of those who had come before. One passage in particular caught his attention—a reflection by a pianist who had faced discrimination throughout his career:

They expected me to fail, to falter, to apologize for taking up space at the piano. So I played louder. I played with more heart. I made them hear me until they couldn't pretend I was invisible anymore.

The words resonated deeply, stirring something in Elijah that had long been dormant. He closed the book and moved to his broken keyboard, turning it on despite the static-filled sound it produced. With the book's inspiration fresh in his mind, he began to play, working around the missing keys, reimagining the melody to accommodate the instrument's limitations.

The next day at school, Dell greeted Elijah with unusual excitement. "I have a proposition for you," he said as soon as Elijah entered the music room. "How would you feel about recording some of your playing properly? I mean, with good equipment."

Elijah hesitated. "What for?"

"For you," Dell replied. "So you can hear what I hear when you play. Sometimes we need that outside perspective to truly understand our own gifts."

Before Elijah could respond, there was a knock at the door. To his surprise, Alicia stood in the doorway, a tentative smile on her face.

"I hope I'm not interrupting," she said. "Mr. Delacroix asked me to help with some recording."

Elijah shot Dell a questioning look, but the old teacher merely smiled. "Alicia knows her way around audio equipment better than I do, and she's already heard you play, so..."

"Just once," Alicia added quickly. "And I thought it was amazing."

Caught between discomfort and a strange new desire to share his music, Elijah finally nodded. "Okay. Just one recording."

For the next hour, Dell and Alicia set up equipment while Elijah warmed up at the piano, his initial nervousness gradually giving way to the familiar comfort of the music. When everything was ready, he closed his eyes and began to play a piece he had been developing in his head for days, inspired by Dell's book and his own experiences.

The music flowed from him without effort, his fingers finding the perfect keys, even with his eyes closed. It was both structured and improvisational, drawing on classical training but infused with jazz rhythms and blues-inspired chord progressions. As he played, he felt the weight of years lifting from his shoulders—the mockery, the silence, the loss—all transformed through his fingertips into something beautiful.

When he finished, the room was silent. He opened his eyes to find both Dell and Alicia staring at him with expressions of stunned appreciation.
