That evening, Emma prepared another bag of food, but this time Michael joined her. They walked to the back entrance together. Thomas was sitting beneath the streetlight. When he saw Emma, he smiled, but when he saw Michael, his expression changed. He immediately stood."Who is he?"Emma smiled. "This is Michael. He owns the restaurant."Thomas looked uncomfortable. "I haven't stolen anything."Michael shook his head. "I know." He handed him the food. "This is yours."Thomas looked at Emma, then back at Michael. "Why?"Michael answered, "Because my employee taught me something."Thomas smiled faintly. "She's a good woman.""She is."Thomas opened the bag. His eyes filled with tears; he hadn't eaten a hot meal in two days.Michael noticed his hands trembling. "Where do you sleep?"Thomas pointed toward an abandoned building across the street.Michael frowned. "That's not safe."Thomas shrugged. "It's all I have."Michael didn't say anything. He simply told him, "Come back tomorrow."Thomas looked confused. "Why?""You'll see."The next morning, Emma woke up to someone knocking on her apartment door. She had barely slept. She opened the door and froze: Thomas was standing outside, but he wasn't alone. Behind him stood two men in suits.Emma looked confused. "Thomas?"The old veteran smiled. "Good morning, Emma.""What are you doing here?"One of the men stepped forward. "My name is Robert Hayes. I represent the Hayes Foundation."Emma frowned. "I don't understand."Robert looked at Thomas, then back at Emma. "Mr. Thomas Hayes served in the military for 22 years."Emma stared at him. "Thomas Hayes?""Yes," Robert continued. "He was once the director of a large veterans rehabilitation program."Emma's mouth opened.Thomas smiled. "I lost everything after my wife died." His voice became quiet. "I became depressed. I stopped answering calls. I stopped going home."Emma's eyes filled with tears. "I didn't know.""Nobody did."Robert opened a folder. "Thomas has recently been searching for someone."Emma looked confused. "Who?"Robert smiled. "Your mother."Emma froze. "My mother?"Thomas nodded. "Her name was Sarah Carter."Emma's heart began pounding. "How do you know my mother?"Thomas reached into his coat. He pulled out an old photograph. Emma recognized her mother immediately: she was standing beside a much younger Thomas.Emma stared at the photograph. "Where did you get this?"Thomas smiled. "Your mother saved my life."Emma couldn't speak.
