"Catherine," he said warmly.
"Philip," she smiled. "You were magnificent. More than magnificent."
"Thank you. I didn't know you would be here."
"I didn't know you were playing, either," Catherine laughed softly. "But I am so glad I came."
They looked at each other for a moment. There was no more awkwardness, no more shame, only mutual respect.
"You made it," Catherine said. "Just as you said, on your own."
Philip nodded. "It wasn't easy, but every note I played tonight had a meaning. It was real."
"We could feel it," she said. "Everyone felt it."
Professor Bennett approached. "Maestro, we already have three requests for other concerts. London is already falling in love with you all over again."
Philip smiled. "It is an honor, Professor."
The professor noticed Catherine. "Ah, Miss Radcliffe! What a pleasure to see you here."
"The pleasure is mine, Professor."
"Well, I will leave you to talk. Philip, I'll speak to you tomorrow." The professor walked away with a knowing smile.
They were left alone in the nearly empty lobby of the hall.
"What will you do now?" Catherine asked.
"I will keep working my delivery job," Philip said. "But I will also play. One step at a time, without rushing. It's the right thing to do." He looked into her eyes. "And how are you?"
