It surprised her.

Vanessa exhaled.

“I thought you might.”

“Why?”

“Fourteen years.”

“Fifteen next week.”

“I’m sorry.”

Claire touched the plane-ticket envelope inside her handbag.

“So am I.”

She filed for divorce four days later.

No dramatic service at Meridian.

No photographers.

Ryan received the petition at his attorney’s office.

That evening he came home for clothes.

Sophie stayed in her room.

Ryan stood in the kitchen.

Claire folded a dish towel because her hands needed work.

“She won’t see me.”

“I know.”

“What do I do?”

“Give her time.”

“She hates me.”

“She’s angry.”

“She said hate.”

“She’s fourteen.”

Ryan sat.

“I messed everything up.”

Claire did not answer.

He looked at her.

“Can you please not be calm?”

She almost laughed.

“You want me to scream?”

“I don’t know.”

“You want punishment you understand.”

Ryan stared.

Claire continued:

“If I scream, you can apologize.”

“If I throw something, you can clean it up.”

“If I tell you I’m done…”

Her voice cracked.

“That is harder.”

Ryan began crying.

Claire looked away.

He said:

“I don’t want to lose Sophie.”

“Then stop making her responsible for your fear.”

His face tightened.

“I’m not.”

“You came here asking me what to do because she won’t talk to you.”

“That’s normal.”

“Yes.”

Claire nodded.

“Ask her once if she wants contact.”

“If she says no, respect it.”

“For how long?”

“I don’t know.”

“What if she never—”

“Ryan.”

He stopped.

Claire looked at him.

“You keep wanting guarantees.”

“The company.”

“The marriage.”

“Vanessa.”

“Sophie.”

“You made secret decisions because uncertainty scared you.”

Ryan stared.

Claire had not understood that until she said it.

Neither had he.

She continued:

“You can’t force your daughter to forgive you so you feel secure.”

Ryan cried quietly.

“I know.”

“No.”

Claire softened.

“You’re starting to.”

He nodded.

Sophie agreed to see him two weeks later.

Only because her therapist suggested a structured conversation.

Claire did not attend.

Sophie told her afterward.

“He apologized.”

“How was it?”

“Bad.”

Claire smiled faintly.

“Bad how?”

“He cried.”

“Adults do that.”

“It was awkward.”

“Yes.”

Sophie sat at the kitchen counter.

“He said he was sorry he made me keep a secret.”

Claire waited.

“And?”

“I told him I didn’t keep it for him.”

“What?”

“I kept it for you.”

Claire’s throat tightened.

Sophie looked angry again.
