"My mother has ruled the Westford estate through manipulation and my own apathy—that ends today. She forged documents. She stole from the estate to fake your payoff. That is a crime, Clara, even for a dowager duchess."

He walked back to her, invading her space, forcing her to look up into his storm-gray eyes.

"I am not asking for your forgiveness," Arthur said, his voice steady and resolute. "I do not deserve it. I should have looked harder. I should have known you would never take a bribe. I failed you and I will spend the rest of my life paying for that failure. But I am not leaving you in this squalor for another hour. You and Leo are coming with me now."

Clara shook her head, tears finally spilling over her lashes. "Arthur, I am frightened. I built a life here. It is meager and it is hard, but it is mine. It is safe."

"It is not safe," Arthur countered gently, gesturing to the cold stove and the damp walls. "It is merely survival. Let me protect you. Let me be a father to my son."

Clara looked at him, searching his face for any sign of deception, any hint of the trap she had fallen into three years ago. But his eyes were utterly open, bearing the raw, bleeding truth of his devotion.

Before she could answer, a loud knock rattled the thin wooden door.

Clara jumped, but Arthur moved smoothly past her, pulling the door open. His coachman, Reynolds, stood on the landing, his hat in his hands, dripping rainwater onto the floorboards. He looked mildly shocked to see his employer standing in such a hovel, but he schooled his features instantly.

"The axle is shattered, Your Grace," Reynolds reported. "The smith says it will take at least 2 days to forge the parts and repair the carriage. I have taken the liberty of securing the private parlor and the best bedchambers at the Golden Stag in the upper town."

"Excellent," Arthur said without missing a beat. "Bring the carriage blankets up here. We have luggage to transport and a child who needs to be kept warm."

Reynolds nodded and vanished down the stairs.

Arthur turned back to Clara. The decision was made. He was taking control, bulldozing over her hesitations with the sheer force of his will.

He walked over to the bed. Leo shrank back slightly against the pillows, clutching the edges of Arthur's massive coat.

Arthur did not reach for him. He sat on the edge of the mattress, keeping a respectful distance, understanding that to this boy he was nothing but a terrifying stranger.

Slowly, Arthur reached into his waistcoat pocket. He pulled out a heavy gold pocket watch attached to a chain. He pressed the latch and the gold cover sprang open with a soft click. He held it out on his flat palm.

"Do you hear that?" Arthur asked quietly.

Leo leaned forward, his curiosity warring with his caution. He nodded slowly. "Tick, tick."

"That's right," Arthur smiled, a genuine, rare expression that softened the harsh lines of his face. "It keeps the time. It belonged to my father. And one day it will belong to you."

He gently placed the watch on the blanket near Leo's knee. The boy hesitated, then reached out a small, pale hand, and picked it up, marveling at the shiny metal and the intricate moving hands.

Clara watched them. She watched the massive, imposing duke sitting on the edge of a miserable cot, speaking in hushed, gentle tones to the boy he had never known. The icy band of terror that had gripped her chest for 3 years finally began to thaw, replaced by a terrifying, fragile ember of hope.

It took them 3 minutes to pack. That fact alone nearly broke Arthur's composure again. 3 years of a life contained within one battered leather satchel.

Reynolds returned with thick, dry woolen blankets. Arthur wrapped one entirely around Clara, pulling the hood over her hair before scooping Leo up into his arms. The boy tensed, but Arthur's grip was secure and surprisingly gentle.

"Come," Arthur said, looking back at the woman he loved. "Let us go home."

Clara took a deep breath, looked around the cold, damp room one last time, and stepped out the door.

The Golden Stag sat in the wealthier upper quadrant of the town, a stark contrast to the miserable alleys they had just left behind. It was built of heavy, dark stone, boasting leaded glass windows that glowed with the inviting light of hearth fires.

Reynolds had procured the proprietor's private parlor. When Arthur pushed the heavy oak door open, a wall of glorious, stifling heat washed over them.

A massive stone fireplace dominated the far wall, a fire roaring within it. A thick wool rug covered the floorboards, and a heavy mahogany table was already being set with steaming platters of roasted fowl, root vegetables, and fresh buttered bread.

Clara stopped just inside the doorway. She stared at the fire. It had been months since she had stood close enough to a flame to actually feel its heat penetrate her bones. The sheer abundance of the room felt almost violent.

It was too much, too fast. She gripped the edges of the heavy wool blanket draped over her shoulders, suddenly intensely aware of her mud-caked boots and the sour smell of damp wool clinging to her skirts.

Arthur did not rush her. He stepped past her, carrying Leo to a large armchair positioned near the hearth. He set the boy down gently.

Leo's eyes were wide as saucers, darting from the roaring fire to the silver platters of food.

"My lord," the innkeeper bowed, nervously wringing his hands. "I have ordered the copper tub brought to the adjoining chamber as requested. The hot water is being drawn now."

"Leave us," Arthur said, his tone leaving no room for pleasantries.

The innkeeper scurried out, closing the heavy door behind him with a soft click. The sudden quiet was heavy, punctuated only by the crackle and spit of burning logs.
