"Yes."

They did not sign. They closed the screens. They went to bed early and lay awake late, backs not quite touching, the radiator ticking like a clock that refused to take sides.

Thursday morning arrived with thinner rain and thicker calendars.

At the hospital, Declan walked the south corridor where a leaking expansion joint had become his unofficial thesis. Jorge fell into step beside him with a tablet and the expression of a man delivering news he did not own.

"Legal called again," Jorge said. "They're polite the way knives are polite."

"I need a day."

"You have one day. After that Bridgeport's guy gets the packet. He's younger. He smiles in meetings. Administration likes smiles."

Declan stopped under a fluorescent panel that hummed. "If I take it, who covers Waterbury through the first winter?"

"Me, until I burn out, then a contractor who bills like a novelist." Jorge hesitated. "Look. I want you to get the win. I also want you to sleep in your own bed. Those wants are not friends."

"Join the club."

In the parks department offices across town, Nadine Okada placed the printed acceptance packet on Rhea's desk with two pens, as if redundancy might encourage courage.

"Sign," Nadine said. "Then we announce. The mayor's office already drafted a quote that makes you sound like civic poetry."

Rhea looked at the signature line. "I need until tomorrow."

"You needed until yesterday. What changed?"

"My husband was offered New Haven for twenty-two months."

Nadine sat on the edge of the desk, professional and human in the same posture. "And you're deciding which marriage gets the geography."

"I'm deciding whether we can afford honesty without punishing each other for timing."

Nadine exhaled. "I left Oakland for this job. My partner stayed for a year and then didn't. The Green Spine will outlive your quarrel. It will not babysit it. If you sign, sign knowing Declan may resent the trees. If you don't, know this department may not get another chance like this while I'm still breathing budget air."

"That's not pressure."
