Nia appeared in the doorway.

She froze when she saw the letter.

“I didn’t know you were coming today.”

Caleb looked at her.

“I needed clothes.”

“Oh.”

She remained near the door.

Caleb held up the letter.

“You wrote this?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you send it?”

“Because every message from me felt like pressure.”

Caleb nodded.

He looked around the bedroom.

“Do you remember when the AC broke at the apartment?”

Nia smiled weakly.

“You complained for six straight hours.”

“It was ninety degrees.”

“You said we were going to die.”

“I was being dramatic.”

“You put ice cubes inside your shirt.”

Caleb almost laughed.

Then the smile vanished.

“I miss us.”

Nia’s eyes filled.

“So do I.”

Caleb looked at her.

“But I don’t know if us exists anymore.”

Nia nodded.

“I know.”

Another month passed.

Then another.

Caleb moved from Marcus’s apartment into a furnished rental.

He and Nia continued counseling.

Some days, Caleb believed they might survive.

Other days, he wanted to file immediately.

Trust did not return in a straight line.

One night, Nia’s phone buzzed during dinner.

Caleb’s entire body tightened before he could stop himself.

Nia noticed.

She turned the phone over.

“It’s Rachel.”

“You don’t have to show me.”

“I know.”

Caleb pushed his food around the plate.

Nia looked at him.

“That happened because of me.”

Caleb met her eyes.

“Yes.”

She nodded.

“I’m sorry.”

This time, Caleb didn’t become angry at the apology.

He simply said, “I know.”

Six months after the morning at Briarstone Lane, Caleb and Nia reached the question they had been avoiding.

Stay married or separate permanently.

Dr. Reeves asked them to spend one week without discussing the decision.

Then return with an answer.

Caleb spent the week remembering.

Not only the affair.

Nine years.

The good and the bad.

He asked himself whether staying would be courage or fear.

Whether leaving would be self-respect or avoidance.

There was no simple answer.

Nia spent the week alone in the house.

She stopped asking what she wanted Caleb to choose.

Instead, she asked what she would do if he chose to leave.

For the first time, she accepted that rebuilding herself could not depend on saving the marriage.

Friday arrived.

They met at the therapist’s office.

Dr. Reeves looked at Caleb first.

“You don’t have to justify your answer. Just tell us where you are.”

Caleb took a breath.

“I’m not ready to end the marriage.”

Nia closed her eyes.

Tears appeared immediately.

Caleb continued before hope could take over the room.

“But I’m not ready to come home either.”

Nia nodded.

“I understand.”

Caleb looked at her.

“I want to try.”

Nia whispered, “Okay.”

“Trying is not a promise.”

“I know.”

“I may still decide I can’t do this.”

“I know.”

“And if I stay, you cannot spend the rest of our lives acting like you owe me submission because of what happened.”
