Petra frowned.

“What?”

He walked around the table.

Took her hand.

Flour still dusted her fingers.

“You've done enough.”

“I need—”

“No.”

“Declan.”

He brought her hand to his chest.

She became quiet.

“You can stop earning your place here.”

Nobody moved.

Petra’s eyes immediately filled.

She hated it.

“Don't.”

Declan smiled gently.

“You already have one.”

Petra looked toward the boys.

Beau held her gaze.

Then nodded once.

That nearly broke her.

She looked back at Declan.

“I didn't come here to replace Carol.”

Jamie’s eyes lowered.

Petra continued.

“I couldn't.”

“I wouldn't.”

Declan nodded.

“I know.”

“I only wanted…”

Her voice failed.

She swallowed.

“I wanted to build something new with you.”

Declan wrapped one arm around her waist.

“Then stay beside me.”

He brushed loose auburn hair from her cheek.

“That’s all I want you to build.”

Then kissed her forehead.

Petra closed her eyes.

Around the table, nobody looked uncomfortable.

That was new.

Jamie whispered:

“Dinner's getting cold.”

Everyone laughed.

Petra opened her eyes.

“Your mother taught you better manners than that.”

The room went quiet.

Jamie looked at her.

Petra’s heart stopped.

Then he smiled.

“She did.”

Declan looked away for a second.

Beau rubbed his jaw.

The sentence had done something extraordinary.

Petra had said Carol’s name without fear.

Not competition.

Not jealousy.

Just fact.

Carol had existed.

Carol still mattered.

And Petra was here too.

Both could be true.

They sat.

Declan offered grace.

Short.

Simple.

He thanked God for the animals.

The house.

The road opening.

Then:

“And for Petra.”

She squeezed his hand beneath the table.

The blizzard became a dividing line in the Stern family.

Before.

After.

Before the storm, Beau called her Petra because anything else felt disloyal.

After, he still called her Petra.

But differently.

Warmth entered it.

Cole started asking whether she needed help rather than waiting to be told.

Rhett began sitting in the kitchen while Petra did books.

Sometimes he spoke.

Sometimes not.

She never forced him.

Nate stopped testing her agricultural knowledge.

Instead he began asking actual questions.

Petra considered that a victory.

Jamie changed most slowly.

Which meant most deeply.

Three weeks after the storm, he came into the kitchen carrying the empty cherry-almond lotion bottle he had kept from Carol’s things.

Petra looked.

“What's that?”

“Mom’s.”

“I remember.”

He placed it on the counter.

“You can smell it.”

Petra’s heart tightened.

“Are you sure?”

Jamie nodded.

She opened the cap.

A faint scent remained.

Sweet almond.

Cherry.

Soft.

Domestic.

Petra inhaled.

Then handed it back.

“She smelled nice.”

Jamie smiled.

“Yeah.”

He put it away.

A month later, he accidentally called Petra “Mom.”

It happened at breakfast.

“Mom, where’s my—”

Silence.

Every person at the table froze.

Jamie’s face turned white.

Petra immediately looked down at the toast.

“Your blue gloves are by the stove.”

Jamie stared.

Then ran from the room.

Declan started standing.

Petra stopped him.

“Give him a minute.”

Five minutes later, Petra found Jamie sitting on the back stairs.

She sat beside him.

He was crying.

“I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“I called you…”

“I know.”

“I didn't mean…”

Petra put one arm around him.

He stiffened.

Then leaned against her.

“You don't have to call me anything you don't want.”

“It feels bad.”

“What does?”

“Like I forgot her.”

Petra’s own eyes filled.

“Oh, Jamie.”

She held him tighter.

“You didn't.”

“But I—”

“Loving me doesn't take anything from her.”

He looked up.

Petra continued.

“Your heart isn't a room with one chair.”

“You don't have to kick somebody out before someone else sits down.”

Jamie cried harder.

Petra held him.

After a while, he whispered:

“Can I call you Petra?”

“Forever if you want.”

He nodded.

Then:

“Maybe sometimes Mom?”

Petra kissed his hair.

“Whenever it feels right.”

That spring, Petra’s charity-auction plan worked.

Better than expected.

Two Stern steers entered the Foothills Growers fundraiser.

Local businesses bid aggressively.

A grocery chain owner paid well above regular market price.

Then approached Declan afterward about spring supply.

The operating loan cleared.

Not with abundance.

But breathing room.

Petra showed Declan the final ledger.

He stared.

“We're ahead.”

“Barely.”

“Ahead is ahead.”

She smiled.

He pulled her onto his lap.

Petra laughed.

“The boys.”

“Outside.”

“You checked?”

“No.”

“Declan.”

He kissed her.

The office door immediately opened.

Nate entered.

Stopped.

“Absolutely disgusting.”

Petra jumped up.

Declan laughed.

Nate covered his eyes theatrically.

“I’m traumatized.”

Petra threw a pencil at him.

He ducked.

“Dinner in an hour.”

“Fine.”

He disappeared.

Declan looked at Petra.

“Family.”

She smiled.

“Yes.”

Years passed.

The boys grew.

Beau married first.

A quiet woman named Evelyn who worked at the veterinary clinic.

Before the wedding, Beau found Petra in the kitchen.

He stood awkwardly.

She looked up.

“What?”

“I need something.”

“Money?”

“No.”

“Advice?”

He grimaced.

“Worse.”

Petra smiled.

“What?”

He handed her a small box.

Inside lay Carol’s brooch.

Silver.

Blue stone.

Petra looked at him.

“Mom wore it at church.”

“I know.”

“Dad said…”

He stopped.

Then:

“I thought maybe you could wear it.”

Petra froze.

“Beau.”

“Evelyn’s wearing Grandma Stern’s necklace.”

“I just…”

He rubbed his neck.

“Mom would want something there.”

Petra understood.

Not replacement.

Representation.

She closed the box.

“I’d be honored.”

At the wedding, Petra wore Carol’s brooch.

Jamie noticed first.

He touched it gently.

“Looks good.”

Petra smiled.

“Thank you.”

Cole eventually took over more ranch operations.

Rhett studied agricultural mechanics.

Nate became the family negotiator, which surprised nobody.

Jamie stayed closest to Petra.

By seventeen, he was taller than she was.

Still came into the kitchen when upset.

Still occasionally called her Mom.

Sometimes Petra.

Both meant love.

Declan aged into a softer man.

Not weaker.
