“You can’t stop me.”
“Yes, I can.”
“For sixty dollars?”
“For leaving during an investigation.”
Cassandra raised her phone.
“I want your name.”
“Officer Brooks.”
“Badge?”
He gave it.
She repeated everything into the camera.
Daniel waited.
“I want a supervisor.”
“He’s coming.”
Cassandra blinked.
“You called one?”
“Yes.”
That ruined one of her arguments.
“Oh.”
They waited.
Cassandra tried her Apple account password again.
Wrong.
She called someone named Tasha.
No answer.
Called again.
No answer.
She called a man named Eric.
He answered.
“Hey.”
“Eric, I need you to send me some money.”
Daniel looked away.
Cassandra immediately added, “Not because I don’t have money. My cards are locked.”
Eric sounded confused through the speaker.
“How much?”
“Just send a hundred.”
“To where?”
“Apple Cash.”
“I don’t use that.”
Cassandra closed her eyes.
“Venmo.”
“You said your Venmo got hacked.”
“That was months ago.”
“I don’t think I have you.”
“Eric, just figure it out.”
Daniel looked at the departure board.
Boarding group four.
Eric said something Cassandra did not like.
“I don’t need a lecture.”
She hung up.
Daniel said, “That went well.”
She glared.
“Was that sarcasm?”
“A little.”
“At least you admit it.”
Cassandra called Tasha again.
This time she answered.
“Tasha, I need you to send a hundred dollars.”
“For what?”
“It doesn’t matter.”
“Are you okay?”
“Yes.”
“You sound upset.”
“I’m at the airport.”
“What happened?”
“Nothing happened. Send the money.”
“Okay. To Apple Cash?”
“Yes.”
A pause.
“Your Apple Cash is still linked to your old number.”
Cassandra closed her eyes.
“What?”
“Remember? You changed it.”
“I updated that.”
“I don’t think you did.”
Cassandra turned away from the officers.
“Can you just send it somehow?”
“I can Zelle you.”
“My bank app is locked.”
“Why?”
“I don’t know!”
Passengers nearby turned again.
Cassandra covered her face.
“Tasha, please.”
Another pause.
“I’ll call you back.”
“No. Don’t call me back. Fix it now.”
