"If he goes to the house—"

"Then the police go to the house. And Mr. Grant, from what I saw of him. And a lawyer named Ocampo who, I'm told, does not sleep. And none of them are fifteen." She held his eyes. "You stood in a doorway once, Malik. You were twelve. You should never have had to. That's what your mother can't live with. Not that you were brave. That you had to be. She is trying to make sure you never stand in one again."

Headlights came over the rise to the north. The bus slowed, hissed, and pulled under the canopy, and its door folded open. The driver looked out at them, a boy with a backpack and an old woman in a bathrobe.

Malik held his ticket. He held it until the driver said, "You coming, son?"

"No, sir," Malik said.

The door folded shut. The bus pulled out.

They sat a while longer. Then his grandmother stood up, slowly, one hand on her knee.

"I'm not forgiving you," Malik said. "For her. For what you did to her."

"I didn't ask you to," Odessa said. "It isn't yours to give."

She drove him home with the radio off.

The message from JojoRex came the next afternoon, while Malik was stacking cans of green beans in the basement of Allen Chapel. It was the first thing Jojo had sent him in eight days.

It was a file, and under it, typed in the crooked way of voice-to-text: malik its my fault i told daddy you walk by the laundry and the shell. im sorry. mom is not mad at you. watch it. i hit the red button like you said.

Malik went into the basement bathroom and locked the door and pressed play.

The picture was tilted and dark, the porch boards huge in the foreground, shot through the gap of a door. He saw his own sneakers go down the steps. He heard the Buick start. He saw the porch light, and his mother's back, and then he saw her sit down on the top step like her strings had been cut, and he heard a sound come out of her that he had never heard in his life, not even three years ago in the kitchen.
