"Mark, stop being Mark. Pick up. I don't understand. We're outside. They wouldn't seat us. They said the card on file was removed. Sarah had to pay for the drinks at the bar, and it was like $80, and it was so embarrassing! Where are you? Are you at the apartment? I'm coming home. We need to talk about this. You can't just do this to me on my birthday!"

She still didn't get it. She thought this was a fight. She thought this was a tantrum she could manage.

At 8:10 p.m., Sarah texted: Mark, that was incredibly cruel. Maya is hyperventilating. Whatever is going on, you don't do this to someone publicly. Be a man and answer your phone.

I finally typed a response—not to Maya, to Sarah: Ask her about Gavin. Ask her about the break room. Then tell me who isn't being a man.

I put the phone back down.

At 8:30 p.m., Maya texted: I'm at the apartment. Mark, where's your stuff?

The realization phase. She had rushed home to confront me, probably ready to scream and cry and manipulate me back into submission. Instead, she walked into a ghost town. I had been efficient: my clothes were gone, my toiletries, my laptop, my gaming console, my documents. I had even taken the coffee maker I'd bought before we moved in. The apartment wasn't empty—her stuff was everywhere—but I was erased. The space where I used to be was just air.

  • 8:35 p.m. — Maya: You moved out? Are you serious? Over a cuddle? Mark, this is psychotic. You are blowing this way out of proportion.

  • 8:40 p.m. — Maya: Please come back. I'm scared. I don't want to be alone tonight.

  • 8:45 p.m. — Maya: Gavin is just a friend. I'll block him if that's what you want. Just come home.

It was textbook: first, attack the reaction (You're psychotic); then, play the victim (I'm scared); finally, the desperate bargaining (I'll block him).

But she missed the point. I didn't care if she blocked Gavin. Gavin wasn't the problem. The problem was that she looked at me, saw my pain, and told me it was my defect. She had broken the fundamental contract of our relationship: I protect you, you respect me.
