The piano stopped when she stopped. The quiet after was large.

"Thank you, fourteen," the silver-bun woman said. Her pen moved. The younger judge's face had changed by a degree a person could miss if they wanted to miss it. The man in the sweater nodded, once, to himself.

Willa walked back to the wall. Her legs shook in the decent way, the used way. Number 9 whispered, "Okay, wow," with surprise she did not bother to hide. Willa sat down and put her palms on her knees until the knock in her chest agreed to be a pulse again.

She did not know if she had won anything. She knew she had not lied.

At the pavilion, the light was brighter and less forgiving. Audrey stretched at the side of a marley floor while a man with a Belland lanyard watched a senior do a turning sequence that was technically clean and emotionally vacant. Patricia stood by the door, as instructed, coat still on, hands around a paper cup of coffee she did not want.

Audrey's group was called. She went out like a person who had rehearsed being watched. The black costume fit because it had been altered twice. Her shoes were pale and perfect and made the right sound. She hit the turn the picker cared about. She did not rush it. Patricia saw the man's pen pause and then write, and felt her own lungs remember their job.

In the pause between groups, Audrey came to the side and drank. Her hoop earring had a hair caught on it. Patricia almost reached to free it and stopped, because hovering mothers also freed hairs.

"He wrote," Patricia said.

"He writes on everyone. Don't make a parade."

"You didn't rush."

"I know." Audrey's eyes were bright with the hard shine of adrenaline. She looked past her mother at the doors, as if expecting a smaller coat to come through them and rearrange the room. "Have you heard from the coach."
