By the following winter, the visits had become small enough to feel like life. Robert came by occasionally with old pictures, but he learned to call first. Evelyn helped with the church meal program and stopped correcting people when they assumed she was merely another volunteer. Claire wrote an apology that Naomi accepted as a letter, not a solution, and the two women agreed to speak when neither felt pressured. Eli began calling Robert "Mr. Ward" and Evelyn "Miss Evelyn," names that suited everyone better than a sudden demand for grandparent titles.

On the anniversary of the storm, Evelyn arrived with Robert carrying a small wrapped parcel. She waited until Eli was upstairs before giving it to Naomi, and she said that there was no reason to open it until she wanted to. Inside was the silver locket, polished but still marked by decades of use, with Daniel's portrait beneath the tiny hinged lid. Naomi held it in her palm and remembered the first night, when she had refused to accept it because she could not separate a keepsake from the apology attached to it. She understood now that the object was not a payment for forgiveness; it was part of her own history, and she could choose what it meant.

"I don't know whether I can forgive that day," Naomi told Evelyn. "Maybe I will, and maybe there will always be a part of me that cannot." Evelyn nodded, her eyes wet but steady. "I know," she said. "You don't have to decide for my sake." Robert reached for his wife's hand, and Naomi noticed how much older they looked than they had only a year earlier. Time was still taking things from them, even as they tried to make something honest from what remained.

Naomi opened the locket and smiled at the young man in the photograph. Her father had never known she existed, but he had loved Loretta, dreamed of a home, and left behind a face she could recognize in her son's concentrated frown. She took the locket upstairs and showed Eli how to fasten the delicate clasp without forcing it. They sat together beneath the paper airplane, talking about Daniel's stubbornness, Loretta's laugh, and the small, imperfect family growing slowly around the kitchen table. Downstairs, Evelyn and Robert waited without calling for them, letting Naomi decide when to return.

Later that evening, snow began falling again, soft and white beyond the front windows. Naomi stood at the door as the elderly couple prepared to leave, and Evelyn hesitated on the threshold. A year earlier, Naomi had opened that door because two strangers were cold, not because she knew what their arrival would mean. She thought of Loretta standing at another door decades before, asking only that her child be acknowledged, and knew that the damage done that day would never disappear. But she also knew that her mother had raised her to choose what kind of woman she would be, even when the choice was difficult.

"Drive carefully," Naomi said. Evelyn nodded, and for a moment she looked at Naomi with a love made humble by regret. "Thank you for letting us come," she replied. Naomi watched Robert guide his wife down the steps toward their car, just as he had guided her through the storm the year before. Then she went back inside, where Eli was setting an extra place at the table because he thought they might stay for supper. Naomi did not call the old couple back that night, but she left the extra chair where it was, ready for another day.
