Shocking amount of time one can of soda can take off your life
In a world where we are bombarded with ever-changing dietary advice, a startling new study has revealed that drinking just one can of soda could cut as much as 12 minutes off your life. That’s right - every fizzy, sugary sip may be silently shaving away precious moments from your future.
While most of us know the dangers of smoking or excessive drinking, the more subtle effects of ultra-processed foods like soda have often been ignored. However, a recent groundbreaking study from the University of Michigan has quantified the toll that specific food and drink choices take on our health - and the results are nothing short of shocking.
Let’s break down what the research found, how it applies to everyday life, and why some experts now believe we should be treating soda like we treat cigarettes when it comes to long-term health impact.
The Study That Sparked a Health Panic
Researchers at the University of Michigan’s School of Public Health analyzed 5,800 different foods and beverages, calculating how each item contributes to either adding or subtracting minutes from your life. The team developed a Health Nutritional Index (HNI) that accounts for:
- Fats
- Calories
- Sugar content
- Additives
- Environmental impact
Each food was evaluated based on its nutritional burden per gram, then standardized to a typical serving size. The result? A number representing the estimated number of healthy life minutes gained or lost when consuming that food.
In their article published in The Conversation, lead researchers Katerina Stylianou and Olivier Jolliet wrote:
“On a daily basis, it's hard to know how much individual choices, such as buying mixed greens at the grocery store or ordering chicken wings at a sports bar, might translate to overall personal and environmental health. That's the gap we hope to fill with our research.”
According to their calculations, a single can of soda (roughly 12 fluid ounces) can take away an estimated 12 minutes of healthy life.
Soda’s Hidden Health Cost
The 12-minute figure may not sound like much, but multiply that by 365 days a year, and a daily soda habit could be shaving more than 4,000 minutes - or 67 hours - off your life every year. Over decades, that adds up to years of lost time.
So what exactly makes soda so detrimental?
- High Sugar Content
Regular sodas like cola, root beer, and orange soda are loaded with added sugars - often more than 39 grams per can. That’s almost 10 teaspoons of sugar, far exceeding the recommended daily limit.
This much sugar can spike blood glucose levels, contribute to insulin resistance, and eventually lead to type 2 diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular disease.
- Zero Nutritional Value
Soda is considered an empty-calorie food. It offers no vitamins, minerals, or fiber - just pure sugar and artificial additives that strain your body without offering anything in return.
- Artificial Sweeteners Aren’t a Free Pass
You might think switching to Diet Coke or other sugar-free alternatives gets you off the hook. Think again. While these drinks don’t contain sugar, they include artificial sweeteners like aspartame, which have raised concerns about their long-term impact on gut health, appetite regulation, and even neurological health.
The study didn’t single out specific brands but referred to soda as a general category. So whether you’re reaching for a classic cola or a zero-calorie version, the health costs are still present - even if they vary.
The Bigger Picture: How Food Adds or Subtracts Time
It isn’t just soda that got scrutinized. The University of Michigan study paints a broader picture of how different foods affect both individual health and the environment.
Here are some of the best and worst offenders according to their findings:
Worst Offenders (Minutes of Healthy Life Lost Per Serving)
- Hot dog: 36 minutes
- Bacon or processed meat sandwich: 26 minutes
- Cheeseburger: 8 minutes
- Soft drink (soda): 12 minutes
- Prosciutto (cured ham): 24 minutes
Best Life-Extending Foods (Minutes of Healthy Life Gained Per Serving)
- Nuts and seeds (30g): +25 minutes
- Grilled salmon (85g): +16 minutes
- Fruits and vegetables (1 cup): +11 minutes
- Legumes (beans, lentils): +9 minutes
- Whole grains: +8 minutes
And here’s the twist: just swapping out 10% of your daily caloric intake from processed meat and beef with plant-based alternatives could result in 48 extra minutes of life per day, according to the researchers.
“Our findings demonstrate that small, targeted substitutions offer a feasible and powerful strategy to achieve significant health and environmental benefits without needing dramatic dietary shifts,” said Jolliet.
Real-World Implications: Why This Matters
This study isn’t just a science experiment - it has profound implications for our health, economy, and public policy.
Public Health Campaigns
Much like anti-smoking campaigns, the idea of calculating “minutes of life lost” could be used to create visual warnings on food packaging, helping consumers make more informed decisions.
Food Industry Reform
The data adds pressure on food manufacturers to reformulate their products - reducing sugar, sodium, and additives - to lower the health risks associated with their foods.
Environmental Impact
The researchers also considered each food's environmental footprint (e.g., greenhouse gas emissions, water use). Unsurprisingly, animal-based and heavily processed foods scored the worst, while plant-based options were more eco-friendly.
This links personal health with planetary health, reinforcing the idea that what’s good for your body is often good for the Earth.
Who Should Be Paying Attention?
Well, everyone, but some public figures stand out in this conversation.
Take Donald Trump, for instance, who reportedly had a red button on his desk in the Oval Office to summon Diet Coke at will. Or Elon Musk, whose former diet was said to include up to eight cans of soda a day.
At 12 minutes per can, that’s 96 minutes a day - or over half a day lost each week - just from soda consumption.
It’s not just celebrities either. Millions of Americans consume sugary drinks daily, unaware of the cumulative effects on both longevity and quality of life.
How to Reclaim Those Lost Minutes
The good news? You can take steps to reverse the damage and add healthy time back to your life.
- Reduce or Eliminate Sugary Beverages
Start small: replace one soda a day with sparkling water, unsweetened tea, or infused water with citrus and herbs.
- Focus on Nutrient-Dense Foods
Add servings of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and nuts. These foods not only nourish your body but actively add life minutes, according to the study.
- Practice Portion Awareness
Even enjoying your favorite indulgences in smaller portions can reduce their overall impact.
- Adopt the “10% Rule”
As mentioned in the study, replacing just 10% of your caloric intake from processed meat with plant-based options can yield huge benefits.
Final Thoughts: Every Minute Counts
We often underestimate the impact of daily choices. But as this study shows, the food and drinks we consume can literally determine the quantity and quality of our future.
One can of soda might seem harmless, but when multiplied across days, weeks, and years, the cost adds up - to minutes, hours, and even years of life lost.
So the next time you’re about to crack open a cold one - not a beer, but a soda - ask yourself: Is it worth 12 minutes of my life?
