It was the way any reasonable man might hesitate before approaching someone clearly important and clearly in a hurry. But he needed an answer. And there was a certain stubbornness in Nolan that had carried him through worse discomforts than an awkward question.
He stepped forward and asked quite simply whether she happened to know the way to a town called Black Ridge. For a moment, Vivien did not even process the words. She was already forming the automatic no, already preparing to walk past him the way she walked past a hundred strangers a week who wanted something from her. Autographs or investments or simply a photograph to prove they had once stood near wealth. But the name landed somewhere underneath her composure, and her feet stopped moving before her mind caught up with why.
Black Ridge. She had not heard those two words spoken aloud in 20 years. And hearing them now from a stranger in an airport felt like being struck by something she could not see coming.
Miles noticed the shift first, the way her shoulders went rigid, the way her jaw tightened in a manner he had only seen twice before in 11 years of working beside her. He asked if everything was all right, and Vivien did not answer him. Instead, she turned toward the gate agent, and in a voice stripped of its usual command, told them to cancel the flight. The words seemed to surprise even her. Miles stared at her as though she had spoken in a foreign language because in 11 years he had never once heard Vivien Ashcroft cancel anything.
Not a meeting, not a dinner, not a single obligation that stood between her and the next acquisition. The flight crew, still boarding, paused mid-motion. A guard's radio crackled uselessly in the silence that followed.
Vivien turned back to Nolan, studying him now with an intensity that made him shift his weight from one foot to the other. She asked who he was going there to see, and something in her tone made it clear the question mattered far more than the words themselves suggested. Nolan hesitated, unsure how much a stranger deserved to know about a promise made two decades earlier, a promise he had carried quietly through every year since.
But there was something in her eyes, something raw beneath the polished exterior that told him this was not idle curiosity. Slowly, deliberately, he answered. He was going to see a man named Elias Ward.
