"She wrote it on the box."

Ethan went still.

Four years of grief had taught him that memory could become unreliable around the edges.

But he remembered Rachel's blue box.

He had packed it himself after the funeral and placed it on the top shelf of Lily's closet because Lily wanted something of her mother's nearby.

He had never opened it.

Some promises were spoken.

Others were made by leaving things untouched.

Clare remained beside the dining table, suddenly aware that she had crossed from a corporate mystery into something private.

"I can leave," she said.

Ethan looked at her.

"Would you?"

The question was quiet.

Clare understood what he meant.

If the notebook contained something damaging to Whitmore Aerospace, would she walk away from it?

"If you asked me to."

Ethan studied her for a moment.

"That is not what I asked."

Clare's hand tightened slightly around the edge of her father's photograph.

Then she answered.

"No. I want to know what is inside."

"Because you want the truth?"

"Because my father wrote that your wife knew what we did, and I have spent my entire adult life defending a company built under his name."

Ethan's expression hardened.

"There it is."

"What?"

"The company."

Clare did not answer.

Ethan lowered his voice so Lily would not hear the weight behind it.

"Rachel used to say Whitmore could turn anything into a business problem. A missed birthday, a broken promise, someone working 60 hours a week. Give it a spreadsheet and suddenly nobody has to ask whether it was right."

Clare absorbed the words without defending herself.

"You think I knew her?"

"I think your family did."

"I was 22 when that photograph was taken."

"And I was 27 when Rachel stopped talking about whatever happened there."

Clare looked toward the hallway.

"Why did you never ask her?"

Ethan's eyes moved to the framed photograph on the shelf.

"Because she asked me to trust her."

The answer landed differently than Clare expected.

No accusation.

No performance.

Just a fact that had survived for years.

Lily returned carrying a faded blue storage box no larger than a shoebox.

She placed it on the table between them.

A white label was taped across the lid.

For Lily. When Dad says it is time.

Ethan stared at Rachel's handwriting.

"Is it time?" Lily asked.

Ethan crouched beside her.

"I think it might be."

He opened the box.

Inside were birthday cards, two photographs, a silver airplane pin, and a blue clothbound notebook.

Ethan reached for it, then stopped when Clare's phone vibrated.

Martin Vance appeared on the screen.

Clare declined the call.

It rang again.

She declined it again.

"He does not usually call twice," she said.

Ethan opened the notebook.

The first pages contained ordinary project notes from 12 years earlier.

Component numbers.

Testing schedules.

Names Ethan recognized.

Then he reached a page with a familiar Whitmore flight-control diagram.

Several figures were circled in red.

Beside them, Rachel had written one sentence.

The reported safety margin does not match the original test data.

Clare leaned closer.

Ethan turned another page.

It was missing.

So were the next three.

Cleanly removed.

"Someone took them," Clare said.

Ethan closed the notebook.

His expression changed immediately.

"You need to leave."

Clare straightened.

"Ethan."

"Now."

"You think I removed them?"

"I think somebody from Whitmore already knew this notebook existed."

Clare's phone vibrated a third time.

This time, a message from Martin appeared.

Clare read it, and the color left her face.

Ethan saw the screen before she could turn away.

I heard you went to Cole's house. If Rachel left a blue notebook, do not let Ethan read it.

Clare did not move.

Martin's message remained on the screen between them.

Eleven words that changed the shape of the room.

Ethan read it again, then looked at Clare.

"How does he know where you are?"

"He should not."

"And how does he know about the notebook?"

Clare had no answer.

Lily stood beside the table, watching both adults with the careful silence children learned when they sensed the conversation had become larger than them.

Ethan closed the blue notebook and turned to her.

"Kiddo, it is getting late. Go brush your teeth. I will come tuck you in."

Lily hesitated.

"Are you mad?"

Ethan softened immediately.

"Not at you. Never at you."

She nodded, picked up her cardboard airplane, and disappeared down the hallway.

Only after her bedroom door closed did Ethan turn back.

"You said Martin did not know you were coming."

"He did not."

"Then somebody told him."

Clare looked at her phone.

"Or he has access to something I did not know he had."

Ethan gave a quiet breath.

"That seems to happen a lot at Whitmore."

Clare accepted the remark.

Twenty-four hours earlier, she might have defended the company.

Tonight, Rachel's missing pages were sitting between them.

"Keep the notebook here," she said. "Do not bring it to Whitmore."

Ethan almost smiled, but there was no humor in it.

"You think I was planning to?"

Clare reached for her coat.

"I'm going back to the office."

"At 9:00?"

"Martin just told me he knows about evidence my father hid for more than a decade. I would rather not wait until morning."

Ethan studied her.

"You still think this is something you can solve from your office."

Clare stopped at the door.

"It is the only place I know to start."

The next morning, she was waiting when Martin arrived at 7:12.

She placed a printed copy of his message on the conference table.

Martin glanced at it and sat down.

"You went to Cole's house without legal counsel."

"How did you know?"

"Clare, there are larger issues here."

"How did you know about Rachel's notebook?"

Martin folded his glasses and placed them beside his hand.

"Your father told me years ago."
