"That woman," he said, "kept a note she didn't mail for six months that says she won't tell me. She had every chance to tell me. She could have ended you with me in April. She didn't, because she said Bryony needed her Gran." He put his hand flat on the folded note. "That's what that woman is."

Winifred looked down at the table. The kitchen clock above the stove, a plastic sunflower that had been there since 1987, ticked.

"You don't know what that year was," she said quietly. "After Leigh. You think you do. You were in it. I was beside it. You lost thirty pounds. You sat in the dark in that house and didn't turn on the lights, and I came over every night with a casserole and you thanked me and put it in the refrigerator and I'd throw it out the next night when I brought the new one. Bryony was three. She'd go into the closet where her mother's clothes had been and sit in it. Just sit in the empty closet. I'd find her there. I sat on that bathroom floor with her more nights than you know about, because you were asleep, finally, and I wasn't going to wake you. I did that for six years. I did her hair for kindergarten. I taught her to read. I went to every recital and every parent conference because you were on a roof in Salina." Her voice did not rise. It never had. "And then you married a woman I'd known for eighteen months, who told me to my face at her own engagement dinner that she always knew where the door was, and I watched my granddaughter get moved to the end of her own house. I watched her get quiet. I have watched a thousand children get quiet, Barrett, it was my job for twenty-six years, and I know what it looks like when a child starts to make herself small so she won't take up room. I was not going to sit on that bathroom floor again. I thought she was going to leave anyway. They always leave. I thought I was only making it quicker. I thought I was sparing Bryony the second time."

"She made herself small," Barrett said, "because her grandmother kept telling her that when it was just the three of us again, she could have her room back. She thought she was supposed to want it. She did want it. And she felt so sick about wanting it that she took her little sister's birthday markers and couldn't stop using them."

His mother looked up.

"Amparo gave Bryony her markers," he said. "In September. Because she heard you tell her mother on that porch that Bryony would be better off without them. She's eight years old, Mom. She thought if she gave away enough of her things, Bryony would be better off and they wouldn't have to go."
