"The city really needs to do something about these beggars. You can't even go shopping anymore without stepping over somebody."
"Excuse me. Have you eaten today?"

"I'm all right, ma'am."
"That's not what I asked you. Have you eaten?"
"Not since yesterday morning."
"There's a diner two blocks east of here and a motel on the same street. I have $100 in my pocket. It's every dollar I have on me, and I want you to take it."
"Ma'am, I can't take your last $100. You keep that."
"You're not taking it. I'm giving it to you. There's a real big difference."
"Why?"
"Because everybody needs help sometimes."
"Do you know why I called you in here? A customer came into my office five minutes ago and told me she watched you hand cash to a vagrant right outside my front entrance."
"He's not a vagrant, Greg. He's a man who hasn't eaten since yesterday."
"He's a problem. I have told you before about engaging with loiterers. It makes customers uncomfortable, and it makes this store look bad."
"It was my own money. I gave it to him before I clocked in. I was standing in a public parking lot."
"It doesn't matter when you did it. You did it in front of our doors in full view of shoppers. Families walk through that entrance. That man sitting there is already a problem, and you kneeling down next to him like he's a guest makes it worse."
"What makes them uncomfortable is having to look at a person who needs help and doing nothing about it."
"That's not your call to make. We have a store conduct policy, and you have ignored it for the last time. I'm letting you go for repeated violations of store policy. Turn in your apron."
"Greg, I have worked here for three years. I have never been late. I have covered every shift anyone has ever asked me to cover. And you are letting me go because I showed basic decency to another human being."
"We're done."
"You just fired the best employee you had. And you did it because kindness embarrassed you."
At the care facility, "There she is. My favorite person on God's green earth."
"Hey, Daddy."
"Hey there, sweetheart. How are you feeling today?"
"Better now that you're here. Sit down, sit down. These nurses won't let me have a decent cup of coffee, and I need some entertainment. Tell me something good."
Emory said, "Nia, dear, I have known your face for 28 years, and that is not your good-news face."
"Nothing, Daddy. I'm fine."
"Baby, do not sit in my room in the sunshine and lie to me."
"I lost my job."
"Tell me."
"There was a man outside the store this morning, sitting on the bench. He hadn't eaten since yesterday, and people were stepping around him like he wasn't there. Some woman dropped her garbage at his feet and kept walking."
"And you helped him."
"I gave him my last $100 for a motel room and a meal. A customer saw it and reported me, and Greg fired me on the spot."
"He fired you for being kind to somebody?"
