Logan lost balance and hit the hardwood.

Hard.

He rolled onto one side.

Camryn stood above him.

Then stopped.

No punch.

No kick.

No insult.

Her hands dropped.

Coach Ramirez came out of the equipment office.

“What happened?”

Nobody answered for about half a second.

Then everybody did.

“He grabbed her jacket!”

“She pushed him!”

“Logan started swinging!”

“They’ve been messing with her all year!”

“I recorded everything!”

Ramirez raised both hands.

“Stop.”

The gym slowly became quiet.

She looked at Camryn.

“Are you hurt?”

“My shoulder.”

Then at Logan.

He was sitting up.

“My head.”

The nurse evaluated both students.

Neither had a serious injury.

Camryn’s shoulder was sore from the jacket grabs.

Logan had a bruised hip and elbow.

The videos were far more complicated than either student’s injuries.

One began almost forty seconds before the shove.

It showed Logan and his friends surrounding Camryn.

Hands repeatedly reaching toward her jacket.

Camryn stepping away.

Logan following.

The collar grab.

The wrist.

The warnings.

Then Camryn’s shove.

The second shove.

Logan falling.

Then Logan rising and throwing punches.

Another camera captured the final exchange from the side.

Camryn retreating.

Logan advancing.

The takedown.

The stop.

Assistant Principal Trent watched everything twice.

Then he met with Camryn and Renee.

“You know where the problem is for you.”

Camryn nodded.

“I pushed him.”

“You pushed him twice.”

“Yes.”

“He was touching your clothing and blocking you.”

“Yes.”

“But at the moment you shoved him, he was not throwing punches.”

“No.”

Renee looked at her daughter.

Camryn did not look away.

“I shouldn’t have done it.”

Trent nodded.

“That matters.”

Then he continued.

“It also does not make the entire incident mutual.”

Camryn looked up.

Trent replayed the rest.
