The old man looked up at him, and something moved in that cold-water face. Just barely. Just at the corners.

"Frankie," he said. "You got old."

And the general laughed, this wet, broken laugh, and sat down hard in the booth across from him, like his legs had quit.

The whole bar was dead silent.

Captain Mercer was standing exactly where he'd been, drink forgotten in his hand, watching a two-star general fold up like a boy in front of the man he'd been mocking 60 seconds ago.

And then the general turned in the booth and found Mercer with his eyes. And his voice, when it came, was not unkind. Which was somehow worse.

"Son," he said, "do you have the faintest idea who you've been talking to?"

He didn't wait for an answer. He told them.

He told the whole bar, in the flat, steady voice of a man who'd told it as an after-action a thousand times in his own head and never once out loud.

March of 1968. A flight of Phantoms out of Chu Lai, tasked over the A Shau Valley, into triple-A so thick the pilots said you could have walked on it. 37-millimeter coming up in strings like burning rope.

The flight lead took a hit on the running engine, then hydraulics, and went down hard into the green on the wrong side of nowhere.

The rules said you came home. The fuel said you came home. Everything said you came home.

And the man in the corner booth, a captain then, call sign Iceman, did not come home.

He put his aircraft into a low orbit over a burning crash site, with the whole valley shooting at him, and he stayed. He marked it. He suppressed. He talked a Jolly Green rescue bird down through the smoke with a voice so calm, the general said, the crew swore later they thought it was a training run.

He kept his cool when there was no cool left to keep. And he got the downed pilot out of that valley alive.
