Expensive watch Margaret knew he could not afford because Lauren had once mentioned he still owed nearly two million dollars after his development company collapsed.
Charles reached toward the folder.
“Margaret, give me my documents.”
Margaret looked at him.
“These are copies of Hale Family Trust forms.”
Daniel froze.
“What?”
Charles’s hand stopped.
Lauren spoke quickly.
“They’re preliminary.”
Margaret turned toward her son.
“Did you sign anything today?”
Daniel frowned.
“Today?”
“Yes.”
“No.”
Lauren looked away.
Margaret noticed.
“Yesterday?”
Daniel thought.
“One thing.”
Her stomach sank even though she already suspected.
“What?”
“Lauren said it was an updated beneficiary acknowledgment.”
Margaret closed her eyes.
Daniel looked between them.
“What?”
She held up the folder.
“Did you read it?”
His embarrassment answered.
Lauren stepped forward.
“It is not what she thinks.”
Margaret ignored her.
“Daniel.”
He rubbed one hand across his jaw.
“It was late.”
“What did you sign?”
“A form from the estate planner.”
“No.”
Margaret shook her head.
“It did not come from our estate planner.”
Daniel’s face changed.
“Then who?”
Margaret looked toward Charles.
His silence answered more loudly than words.
Lauren snapped:
“My father’s attorney prepared it.”
Daniel stared at his wife.
“Why?”
“It was an acknowledgment.”
“Of what?”
“You know we discussed restructuring after marriage.”
“No.”
Daniel shook his head.
“We discussed adding you to my personal accounts.”
“Exactly.”
“That is not the Hale trust.”
Lauren’s eyes hardened.
“You said we were partners.”
“We are.”
“Then why is everything still protected from me?”
A murmur moved through the nearest guests.
Daniel glanced around.
“This is not the place.”
Margaret agreed.
“No.”
She looked toward Lauren.
“It wasn’t.”
Lauren flinched.
Daniel turned to his mother.
“What does the document do?”
Margaret hesitated.
Not because she did not know.
Because once she said it aloud, the marriage would not be able to retreat to the version that existed an hour earlier.
Daniel saw her hesitation.
“Mom.”
Margaret opened the folder.
“The document represents that I approved an immediate transfer of voting authority over six percent of Hale Industrial Holdings into a marital holding company.”
Daniel stared.
“What?”
Lauren said:
“That isn’t what it says.”
Margaret continued.
“It also states that upon marriage, your spouse becomes co-manager of distributions from the Daniel Hale Family Trust.”
Daniel’s face drained.
“No.”
“It has your signature.”
“I didn’t sign that.”
Lauren looked at him.
“You signed the packet.”
“One page.”
“There were tabs.”
“I signed where you told me.”
Charles stepped forward.
“This can be clarified privately.”
Daniel stared at him.
“You gave me this?”
“Lauren did.”
Daniel looked at his wife.
Lauren’s eyes filled.
“Because I knew if I asked you to read thirty pages last night, you’d say later.”
Daniel almost laughed from disbelief.
