Charles smiled. "Now that sounds promising."

The investigation accelerated over the following three days. For the first time, progress came from multiple directions: Genevieve contacted former contractors; Charles reviewed county archives; Nathaniel quietly used resources available through his true identity without revealing the source. Letters arrived, names surfaced, financial trails emerged. Piece by piece, the truth began revealing itself.

One evening, shortly before sunset, Genevieve burst into the stable office carrying several documents, her excitement unmistakable. "We found him."

Nathaniel immediately stood. "Wilkes?"

She nodded. "Or at least what happened to him."

Charles entered moments later, carrying additional records. "He never disappeared voluntarily."

Nathaniel frowned. "Explain."

Genevieve spread documents across the desk. "Six weeks after submitting concerns about the bridge repairs, Wilkes resigned. That part we knew."

"Yes."

"Her finger moved to another page. But according to county tax records, he never accepted another accounting position."

Nathaniel studied the information. "What did he do instead?"

Genevieve's expression darkened. "Nothing. For almost a year."

Silence followed.

Charles picked up the explanation: "Then he left the county entirely, without explanation."

Nathaniel looked between them. "That seems unusual."

"Very," Genevieve nodded. "Especially because multiple witnesses described him as ambitious." She folded her arms. "People planning successful careers do not simply vanish after exposing financial misconduct."

The conclusion hung heavily in the room: someone had silenced him. Perhaps not through threats, perhaps not through force, yet something had happened—something significant enough to make him disappear from the story.

The breakthrough arrived the following afternoon. Nathaniel would remember the moment for the rest of his life.

Genevieve sat in the archive room reviewing contractor invoices when she suddenly froze. Charles happened to be searching nearby shelves; Nathaniel was organizing older ledgers. None of them spoke for several seconds.

Then Genevieve whispered a single word: "No."

Nathaniel looked up immediately. "What happened?"

Her eyes remained fixed on the page before her. "This cannot be right."

Charles crossed the room first. "Genevieve?"
