The council meeting was scheduled for eleven in the upper state room. Charles had chosen the location deliberately. When Edmund ordered the meeting moved downstairs, his brother refused, arguing that the council had gathered in that room for generations.

Several older members supported him, insisting that formal business could not be disrupted by personal inconvenience.

Amelia received the decision while seated in the old ballroom, reviewing copies of the false invoices with Captain Reed.

“They expect you not to attend,” he said. “They are counting on it.”

A local engineer named Mr. Hale unfolded an old architectural plan of Fairmont Hall. Near the western wall, he pointed to a narrow service passage leading to a small freight platform once used to carry trunks and coal between floors.

“The platform is unsafe,” he explained, “but the passage reaches the council corridor. With six men and a reinforced board, we could lift the chair through the final section.”

Captain Reed frowned. “It will not be comfortable.”

Amelia placed her hand on the drawing. “Neither is being discussed in a room chosen to keep me outside.”

At eleven, Charles stood before the assembled council and began presenting his case. He spoke of stability, tradition, and the dangers of allowing private emotion to determine estate policy.

Cecily sat near Beatrice, visibly tense. Edmund occupied the head of the table, but Charles behaved as though authority had already shifted.

“My sister-in-law deserves compassion,” Charles said. “However, compassion must not be confused with competence. Her recent behavior suggests that the burdens of public responsibility have become too great.”

The doors opened behind him. Every man in the room turned.

Amelia entered with Mr. Hale, two veterans, and the estate clerk carrying three boxes of financial records. Dust marked the hem of her dark-blue gown. One wheel bore a fresh scrape from the narrow passage. She did not apologize for her appearance.

Charles stared at her. “How did you enter this room?”

Amelia moved to the empty place beside Edmund. “Through the route used for coal and luggage. It appears those were considered more important than your Duchess when the house was designed.”

Several council members looked down.

Charles recovered quickly. “This interruption proves my point. You have transformed a financial discussion into a performance centered upon your condition.”

“My condition did not falsify invoices.” She placed the first ledger on the table. “My chair did not steal the money. My legs merely made it easier for you to reach the room where you hid it.”

Silence followed as Amelia presented the evidence with the same precision she had used when explaining the community project to Princess Helena. She identified the invented contractors, the transferred funds, the false mechanical lift, and the payments made into Charles’s private account.

Mr. Hale confirmed that no legitimate engineer had been commissioned. The estate clerk verified that Charles had ordered several entries altered after Edmund signed the annual report.

Charles dismissed them as misunderstandings. “Administrative errors do not justify accusing a member of this family of theft.”

Cecily stood. Her hands trembled, but her voice did not. “They were not errors.”

Beatrice turned sharply toward her. “Sit down.”

Cecily remained standing. “The Dowager Duchess asked me to copy supplier names onto private papers so the handwriting could not be connected to Lord Charles. I did not understand why at first. Later, Lord Charles asked me to sign a statement claiming I had witnessed workmen installing the lift.”

Charles’s face darkened. “And did you sign it?”

“No.”

“Because you were confused.”

“Because there was no lift.”

Cecily placed the unsigned statement before the council. “I was promised authority over the household if I helped prove Duchess Amelia was no longer capable of fulfilling her position.”

Beatrice spoke with cold contempt. “You will destroy your prospects over the complaints of a woman who cannot even enter a room without assistance.”

Cecily looked at Amelia. “No. I am ending my prospects with people who believed that made her easier to erase.”

Edmund rose. Until that moment, Amelia had not known whether he would speak as her husband or as the Duke of Fairmont.

He faced the council. “My brother is removed from all financial authority effective immediately. Every estate account will be placed under independent audit. The renovation and community project will be governed by a council chaired by Duchess Amelia, with representatives selected by the veterans, tenants, and village residents it is intended to serve.”

Charles laughed bitterly. “You cannot place the estate in her hands.”

“I am not placing it in her hands. I am acknowledging that she has already done more to protect it than either of us.”

Edmund then looked around the table. “I signed reports I did not read because trusting my brother was convenient. I dismissed my wife’s requests because confronting my family was uncomfortable. I told myself I was preserving peace when, in truth, I was asking Amelia to bear every consequence of my silence.”

Beatrice rose. “You will tear this family apart over a staircase.”

Edmund met her eyes. “This was never about one staircase. It was about deciding who was allowed to belong in this house.”

At his order, the estate constable entered. Charles was escorted away pending formal charges of fraud and embezzlement. Beatrice was stripped of all authority over household funds and seals. No one attempted to stop Edmund.

After the council dispersed, he approached Amelia in the corridor. “I have ordered your rooms prepared beside mine again.”

She looked at him for a long moment. “You believe one honest morning restores what happened over two years?”

“No.”

“Then do not behave as though defending me once has returned us to the marriage we had.”

“I want to repair it.”

“So do I,” Amelia said. “But repair is not the same as returning.”

She told him she would move temporarily into the garden house, a small residence with a level entrance that had once belonged to Edmund’s aunt. From there, she would continue the community project without interference from Beatrice or the main household.

Edmund’s face tightened. “Amelia, I stood before them.”

“You did.”
