"I did."
"Why?"
"I take a picture of every docket."
"Every docket," he said. "You come to a lot of these."
"I come to the ones I'm needed at."
He did not like the answer. He did not like the evenness of her voice, which was low and a little hoarse at the bottom, like a radio turned down. He did not like that she had not stood up. People stood up. Even people who were going to tell you to go to hell stood up first, to do it.
"Are you with the Galvin family?" he said.
Something moved in her face then, though not what he expected. "No," she said. "I'm not with the Galvin family. I know Mrs. Galvin a little. I'm not with her."
"A reporter? The Enterprise?"
"No."
