He was on a ladder at the Hendersons' house, halfway through replacing a rotten soffit board. He ignored the first call. Then the second. By the fifth, he climbed down, wiped his hands on his jeans, and looked at the screen.

Twelve missed calls. Unknown numbers.

One text message, from Blake.

"I'm so sorry. I didn't post it. I swear. Somebody at the party did. It's everywhere."

Below the message was a link.

Daniel didn't want to click it. But he did.

The video was shaky, filmed on someone's phone from behind the inflatable obstacle course. You could hear the music from the party. You could hear people laughing at first, then going quiet.

There was Blake, swinging. Kicking. Spinning.

And there was Daniel in his faded gray T-shirt, moving like water. Never striking back. Always keeping himself between Blake and a little girl with a ponytail.

At the end, the camera caught the moment Daniel offered Blake his hand.

Someone had added text at the bottom of the screen.

"Rich kid black belt picks a fight with a quiet dad. Turns out the dad is a former Navy SEAL."

Eleven million views.

Daniel stood in the Hendersons' driveway for a long time, staring at that number.

Then he put the phone in his pocket, climbed back up the ladder, and finished the soffit. Because he had promised he would. And Daniel Carter kept his promises.

By the time he got home, there was a news van parked across the street.

A young woman with perfect hair and a microphone hurried toward his pickup before he even turned off the engine.

"Mr. Carter! Mr. Carter, can we ask you a few questions? Is it true you served with SEAL Team—"

"No comment," Daniel said quietly.

"People are calling you a hero. Our viewers want to know—"

"Ma'am," Daniel said, and his voice wasn't angry. It was just tired. "My daughter is inside that house. She's eight years old. Please don't film my house."
