The first thing Lieutenant James Carter noticed was the silence.

Not the peaceful kind.

Not the quiet of a neighborhood sleeping after sunset.

The kind of silence that made him feel like he had arrived somewhere a few seconds too late.

James stood at the bottom of the porch steps with his duffel bag over one shoulder and stared at the house he had dreamed about for three years.

The blue paint was slightly faded.

The flower beds were different.

The porch light was brighter than he remembered.

But it was still home.

Or at least, it was supposed to be.

He had imagined this moment countless times.

During long nights overseas.

During missions where the only thing keeping him focused was the thought of returning.

He imagined Sarah opening the door.

She would freeze.

Her eyes would widen.

Then she would cry.

Then she would run.

That was how it happened in his head every time.

Sometimes she would hit his shoulder and tell him he was an idiot for not warning her.

Sometimes she would simply hold him and refuse to let go.

James had carried that image through everything.

The injuries.

The loneliness.

The uncertainty.

Three years earlier, when he kissed his wife goodbye outside this exact house, Sarah had pressed her forehead against his and whispered:

"Come back to me."

James promised.

"I will."

Now he was back.

He had arrived two weeks earlier than expected.

He wanted to surprise her.

The Army had approved his leave suddenly after his final evaluation.

He could have called.

He almost did.

But then he remembered Sarah laughing the last time he surprised her with flowers.

"You always think you're a secret agent."

James smiled at the memory.

He still had flowers in his hand.

White roses.

Her favorite.

He climbed the steps.

The neighborhood looked different.

The neighbor's fence had been replaced.

The old tree across the street was gone.

A family he didn't recognize lived next door.

Time had continued while he was gone.

That thought felt strange.

He knew it.

But he did not feel it until now.

He reached the front door.

His key was still on his ring.

He considered using it.

Instead, he knocked.

He wanted her reaction.

He waited.

Five seconds.

Ten.

Then footsteps.

Slow.

Not running.

James frowned.

The lock turned.

The door opened.

And every thought he had prepared disappeared.

Sarah stood there.

But she was not alone.

She was holding a baby.

A small baby.

Maybe six months old.

The child had dark brown skin, tiny curly hair, and wide curious eyes.

James froze.

Sarah froze too.

For several seconds, neither of them spoke.

The baby looked at him.

Then reached one small hand toward his uniform.

James stared.

He did not understand what he was seeing.

His brain searched for an explanation.

A neighbor's baby.

A friend's baby.

A family emergency.

Anything.

Anything except the obvious conclusion trying to force itself into his mind.

Sarah's face changed.

Shock.

Fear.

Then something worse.

Guilt.

"James?"

His name sounded unfamiliar coming from her mouth.

He looked at the baby again.

Then at her.

"Who is that?"

Sarah's lips parted.

Nothing came out.

James felt his chest tighten.

He lowered the flowers slowly.

"Sarah."

She stepped backward.

The baby shifted against her.

"James, I can explain."

Those words.

He had heard them before.

Not from her.

From other people.

People who knew they had already done damage.

He laughed quietly.

"You can explain."

"Yes."

"Okay."

He nodded.

"Explain."
