"Akzeptabel," he said. Acceptable. Then, continuing in German, "Sagen Sie mir, stört es Sie? Behandelt zu werden, als wären Sie unsichtbar? Oder sind Sie einfach zu dumm, um es zu bemerken?" Tell me, does it bother you? Being treated like you're invisible? Or are you simply too dim to notice?Camille's hands clenched at her sides, but her face remained calm. "Are you ready to order, sir?""Sie beantwortet keine Fragen. Wie faszinierend." She doesn't answer questions. How fascinating. He set down his wine glass. "Haben Sie überhaupt eine Meinung? Oder existieren Sie einfach nur, um zu dienen?" Do you have any opinions at all? Or do you simply exist to serve?Every word was designed to cut. Every sentence dripped with contempt. And Camille took it all, swallowed it down, because she had no choice."I'll give you a few more minutes to decide," she said, turning away."Nein, warten Sie. No, wait. I'll have the ribeye. Medium rare. And make sure it's done properly. I doubt you'd know the difference, but the cook might."Camille wrote down the order without responding. When she walked to the kitchen, her hands were shaking.James was at the stove, his white apron splattered with sauce. When he saw her face, his expression darkened. "That guy again?""Please, just make his steak perfect," Camille said. "I can't deal with him sending it back."James muttered something in Korean that sounded like a curse, but he nodded. The evening crawled forward. Theodore ate his meal slowly, calling Camille over repeatedly for trivial things: more wine, water with no ice, different silverware. Each request was delivered in German, each interaction designed to remind her of her place. At 9:30, the restaurant was nearly empty. Theodore was one of the last customers, nursing an after-dinner drink. Camille was counting the minutes until her shift ended. Then Theodore called her over again."Kommen Sie her. Come here."She approached the table. "Yes, sir?"He looked at her for a long moment, his expression unreadable. "Sagen Sie mir, warum tun Sie das? Es gibt doch sicher andere Jobs, andere Wege, Ihr Leben zu verschwenden." Why do you do this? Surely there are other jobs, other ways to waste your life.It was the first thing he'd said that sounded almost like a real question, even if it was still cruel."We all do what we have to," Camille said quietly."How philosophical," Theodore replied in English, surprising her. Then he switched back to German: "Aber Philosophie bezahlt keine Rechnungen, nicht wahr? Stolz auch nicht." But philosophy doesn't pay bills, does it? Neither does pride. He stood, pulling out his wallet. He dropped two twenties on the table. The meal had cost over a hundred dollars. As he walked toward the door, he paused and looked back. "Gleiche Zeit morgen? Same time tomorrow?"Camille didn't answer. Theodore smiled, satisfied, and left.
