The old man stood naturally.
Hands down.
“Whenever you are.”
Daniel raised his phone.
“I'm timing this.”
Tyler grinned.
“Thirty seconds.”
Daniel said:
“Start.”
The timer began.
0:00.
Tyler exploded forward.
Not full power.
But fast.
A sharp front kick toward the old man’s midsection.
The old man moved half a step.
That was all.
Tyler’s foot missed by inches.
He recovered cleanly.
The students smiled.
Tyler circled.
“Not bad.”
The old man said nothing.
Tyler fired a low kick.
The old man lifted his leg slightly.
Check.
Efficient.
No wasted motion.
Tyler’s expression changed.
0:05.
He threw a quick left jab.
Right cross.
The old man did not block in the conventional sense.
His hands moved just enough to redirect each strike.
Tap.
Turn.
Nothing dramatic.
Tyler stepped back.
For the first time, his smile disappeared.
He looked toward Daniel.
“Who is this guy?”
Daniel folded his arms.
“You picked him.”
A few students laughed.
Tyler heard them.
That was the problem.
He attacked again.
Faster.
Jab.
Cross.
Hook.
Low kick.
The old man shifted.
Tilted.
Stepped.
Tyler’s punches touched nothing.
The final kick swung past.
The old man lightly pressed Tyler’s shoulder as he turned.
Tyler stumbled two steps.
Not a throw.
Barely even a push.
But the entire class saw it.
0:11.
Tyler turned.
His face was red.
“Stop running.”
The old man looked genuinely puzzled.
“I’ve moved maybe six feet.”
“You know what I mean.”
“No.”
Tyler’s jaw tightened.
“Fight.”
The old man looked at Daniel.
Daniel said nothing.
Tyler stepped forward.
“Come on.”
The old man raised his hands.
Not fists.
Open palms.
Tyler charged.
The next exchange lasted less than two seconds.
Tyler reached with his right hand.
The old man caught the wrist.
Not hard.
His left hand touched Tyler’s elbow.
His foot moved outside Tyler’s lead leg.
Then his hips turned.
Tyler suddenly found himself facing the wrong direction.
His balance vanished.
One instant he was attacking.
The next he was falling.
The old man guided him down.
Tyler hit the mat on his side.
Controlled.
Safe.
But unmistakable.
The room inhaled at once.
0:16.
The old man released him immediately.
Then stepped back.
Tyler sat up.
Staring.
No one laughed.
That somehow made it worse.
He jumped to his feet.
“That was judo.”
The old man tilted his head.
“Partly.”
“You said this was karate.”
“I didn’t say anything.”
Tyler looked at Daniel.
Daniel shrugged.
“You challenged him.”
Tyler’s pride had reached the point where stopping would now feel worse than losing.
That is the dangerous moment in any fight.
Not when someone becomes angry.
When they become more afraid of embarrassment than consequence.
Tyler raised his hands again.
“Again.”
The old man shook his head.
“You already got your demonstration.”
“No.”
Tyler pointed.
“You caught me off guard.”
The old man looked toward the timer.
“Fourteen seconds left.”
Several students laughed.
Tyler’s face burned.
“Start it again.”
Daniel said:
“No.”
Tyler turned.
“What?”
“You said thirty seconds.”
Daniel showed the phone.
“Fourteen remaining.”
Tyler stared.
Then looked back at the old man.
“Fine.”
He rushed in.
This time there was nothing playful about it.
A hard right hand.
The old man slipped outside.
Tyler followed with a left hook.
The old man covered and stepped inward.
His shoulder touched Tyler’s chest.
One hand controlled the upper arm.
The other pressed lightly behind Tyler’s shoulder.
Tyler tried to muscle through.
Wrong choice.
The old man changed direction.
Tyler’s own strength carried him forward.
His foot crossed.
His hips twisted.
And suddenly he was bent at the waist with his arm trapped against his own body.
Not painfully.
Yet.
