Cole pointed toward a row of chairs beside the side exit. "You will wait there while military police verify your identity." Walter looked once It's at Thomas's name. "I have already waited long enough. Mercer watched him sit.
Walter's movements were controlled, but age had taken its price. His left knee did not bend easily. He lowered himself with one hand on the chair and kept the envelope beneath his coat with the other. Cole turned to Mercer. 2 minutes.
Photograph the markings. Compare them to the archive terrain model. Do not open the pouch and do not contact the general staff. Mercer accepted the evidence pouch. Yes, sir.
He carried it to the archive terminal. The high-resolution camera caught every scratch in the metal. Mercer magnified the image, removed the color, and increased the contrast. At first, the marks looked random. Then one line curved.
Another divided. A cluster of small dents formed an irregular ridge. Mercer loaded the declassified topographic model of the Bitterroot Range and placed the image beside it. The official withdrawal path ran east of the river. The scratches did not.
They followed a narrow western drainage beneath a broken ridgeline. Mercer rotated the image 12°. The lines settled into place. River, ridge, dry creek bed, and a small triangular notch in the rock that appeared in only one aerial survey from 1969. Mercer's breathing slowed.
He enlarged the lower edge of the metal. Three short cuts had been carved beside the creek bed. Not nine. Three. Behind him, Cole spoke quietly to Walter.
Why today? Winter Lantern was fully declassified at midnight. You knew the exact date? I have known it for 21 years. Walter reached into his inside pocket and removed a folded government notice.
It's creases had nearly worn through. Cole opened it. The letter stated that specific testimony associated with Winter Lantern would remain sealed until July 31st, 2026. You kept this? I kept every delay notice they sent.
How many? Seven. And you never contacted General Holloway? Walter looked toward the doors through which the general would soon enter. I contacted the army.
That is not what I asked. No. Walter folded his hands over the envelope. I never contacted Raymond. Why?
Because he was Thomas's little brother before he was a general. Walter paused. And what was inside that envelope belonged to the brother first. At the terminal, Mercer found a second match. One of the scratches crossed the western drainage and ended at a steep shelf of stone.
In the official files, that shelf had been marked impassable. But a newly declassified surveillance image showed a narrow opening beneath it. A route invisible from the air. A route three men could have used. Mercer turned.
Captain. Cole walked over. Mercer pointed at the screens. The markings correspond to the western drainage. Not approximately.
They match the terrain. Cole's face remained controlled. Coincidence? There is a notch here beneath the ridge. It was not included in any public map.
It appears in one image released at midnight. Cole leaned closer. Mercer lowered his voice. And there are three cuts beside it. Across the hall, Walter sat alone.
He had closed his eyes. For a moment, Fort Ashford disappeared. The marble floor became frozen earth. The clean white light became a moon trapped behind storm clouds. Walter was 22 again.
Lying beneath a shelf of rock while wind drove ice through the torn shoulder of his field jacket. Thomas Holloway crouched beside him. Thomas was 26. His face was streaked with mud. And blood had dried along one side of his neck.
His radio rested between his knees, its casing cracked. Two other men waited in the darkness behind them. Private Luis Ortega could no longer feel his right foot. Specialist Aaron Bell had stopped asking whether anyone was coming. Thomas held a flat piece of metal in one hand and a field knife in the other.
He had broken the metal from the rear plate of a damaged radio. With slow, deliberate pressure, he carved a line into it. This creek takes you west, Thomas whispered. Walter watched the blade move. You are coming with us.
Thomas did not look up. If I stop transmitting, they will know the eastern route is false. We do not know anyone is listening. Thomas gave him a tired glance. You saw the footprints.
Walter had seen them. Boot impressions were no evaluation team was supposed to be. Winter Lantern had begun as a training exercise. By the third night, someone was hunting them with live ammunition and a radio direction finder. Thomas carved a second line.
At first light, follow the drainage until the stone splits. Stay under the shelf. Do not climb. Walter caught his wrist. We leave together.
Thomas looked at the two injured men behind them, then at the radio, then back at Walter. No, the word was quiet, absolute, just as Walter's had been in the hall. Thomas removed the narrow green recognition strip from his own jacket and threaded it through the piece of metal. He pressed it into Walter's palm. This is not a metal.
I know. It is a route. Walter's fingers closed around it. Thomas reached into his jacket and pulled out a yellow envelope wrapped in oilcloth. My brother's name is Raymond.
Walter shook his head. Thomas, when the file opens, you give it to him. No one else. You can give it to him yourself. Thomas smiled then, a small, exhausted smile that never reached his eyes.
I need you to lie to me, Brennan. Walter could barely hear him over the wind. Tell me you will get them home. Walter looked at Ortega, at Bell, at the darkness beyond the rocks, then back at his sergeant. I will get them home.
Thomas nodded. Good. He lifted the radio handset and transmitted the eastern route again. Walter opened his eyes in the Hall of Valor. His right hand was closed around nothing.
Mercer was still speaking to Captain Cole. This was carved by someone who knew the ground. The Western passage had not appeared in any cleared record until midnight. Cole looked toward Walter. For the first time, he did not see an unscheduled elderly visitor.
He saw a witness. A staff officer approached from the main doors. Captain, the general's motorcade has entered the installation. 5 minutes. Cole looked at the evidence pouch, then at the sealed envelope, then at the family seated beyond the lobby.
His duty was clear. That was what frightened him because there were now two duties. Protect the ceremony or protect the truth. Lieutenant Mercer, Cole said, take the image and the terrain match to Colonel Avery. Mercer stared at him.
You told me not to contact command staff. I am changing the order. Cole turned to the security officer. Screen the envelope externally. No opening.
