Elsie Pharaoh felt her heart pound the moment Nathaniel Cross slammed his hand on the wooden table and dared her to do the one thing every stable hand in the county feared: ride Tempest, the Duke's wildest stallion, bareback—no saddle, no rope, no safety net.

The kitchen fell silent. Even the clatter of pots seemed to stop. Bridget Lowe, the visiting lady's maid, folded her arms and smirked, certain this quiet, unremarkable servant girl would refuse and shrink back into the shadows where she belonged.

But Elsie did not flinch. She looked Nathaniel dead in the eye and said one simple word: "Fine."

The room erupted into nervous laughter, whispers, and disbelief. Nobody could tame that horse. Tempest had thrown three grown stable hands in the past month alone, one of them breaking his arm in the fall. The animal was pure muscle and fury, a black storm trapped inside a body, and everyone in the household had learned to give him a wide, respectful distance. Yet here was a maid, barely twenty years old, agreeing to climb onto his bare back in front of a mocking crowd.

What none of them knew was that high above in the west wing, Duke Alaric Vane stood at his window with a glass of untouched wine in his hand. He had heard the commotion drifting up from the courtyard and glanced down out of idle curiosity. What he saw stopped him cold: a servant girl standing perfectly calm amid a circle of jeering staff, her chin lifted, her eyes steady, agreeing to a challenge that had humbled far stronger men. He set his glass down slowly, intrigued despite himself.
