In the spring of 1973, on a Tuesday morning in late April, a 16-year-old boy walked into the service bay at Keterman's Implement on the west edge of Duffy County, Nebraska, and asked the parts manager if he could have the cracked leaf springs that were sitting in the scrap pile behind the building, not buy them.
Have them. There were 11 of them pulled from cultivators and a grain wagon and one old truck chassis that had been sitting on blocks since 1968.

The parts manager, a man named Roland Kesler, looked at the boy the way you look at something you cannot quite categorize, and then he said, "Sure, kid. They're yours."
Because what else do you say to a question like that? The boy's name was Elias Bruns. He was 5 feet 8 inches and 140 pounds, and he had a notebook in his back pocket that he carried the way other boys carried a comb.
He loaded the springs into the back of a borrowed half-ton truck, drove 11 miles east on a gravel road, and turned north at the section line that ended at his grandfather's place.
The grandfather's name was Hyram Bruns, and he was 67 years old that spring, and he had a coal forge in a board-and-batten shop that he had built in 1941 with lumber from a mill in Ainsworth.
The shop was 32 feet long and 18 feet wide, and it smelled of coal smoke and linseed oil, and the particular dry metal scent of iron that has been worked and worked again over decades.
Hyram had been a blacksmith by trade before the implement dealers made most blacksmiths into history, and he had kept the forge because he believed, as he told Elias more than once, that there was no such thing as worn out iron, only iron that had been asked to do the wrong thing. He said it the way a man states a fact about the weather.
He did not explain it further. He expected you to find out what it meant. Elias had been coming to that shop since he was 9 years old, standing on a wooden box to reach the anvil horn, learning to read the color of hot steel, the way other children learn to read a clock. Hyram taught by proximity and repetition and very few words.
He would hold a piece of steel at the correct angle and wait for the boy to see why. He would strike a blow and then hand the hammer over without comment. When Elias made an error, Hyram would look at the result for a moment, then say, "Heat it again." That was the whole of the correction.
Heat it again and try to see what you did. The notebook in Elias's back pocket was full of temperatures and hammer weights, and the number of heats it took to move a given thickness of spring steel a given number of degrees without cracking it further. That April morning, Elias unloaded the 11 springs and laid them on the ground outside the shop door. Hyram came out and walked the row of them, hands in his pockets, not touching anything.
He looked at the cracks in each one, the direction of the fracture, the thickness at the root. He picked up the worst one and flexed it slightly, listening, then set it back down. "Good steel," he said. "5160, or close to it. Somebody paid good money for these once."
Elias said, "I know." That was the whole conversation about what they were. What happened next was the work. You need to understand what 5160 spring steel is before the rest of this story makes sense.
It is a high-carbon steel, carbon content around six-tenths of a percent and it is chosen for leaf springs because it can absorb enormous repeated stress without permanent deformation provided it is properly tempered. It has a working range, a narrow band of orange heat between roughly 1,400 and 1,900°F, where it moves willingly under a hammer. Outside that range, it either tears or refuses to move at all. The cracks in Elias's salvaged springs were stress fractures, not material failures.
The steel itself was intact. What had failed was the geometry, the way the spring had been asked to flex. Hyram had explained this to Elias the previous winter, sitting at a workbench with a broken spring section and a cup of coffee, drawing the stress lines in pencil on a brown paper bag. "The steel remembers every load it ever carried," Hyram said.
"You have to give it a new memory." Elias had spent the winter between November and that April reading everything he could find about bladesmithing, not because anyone had suggested it. He had found a 40-cent paperback at a used bookstore in Ord, a general metallurgy text from 1958 with a chapter on spring steel and its properties. And he had read that chapter until the spine cracked.
