Then she smiled.
“Fine.”
Aaliyah walked away.
It was the first time the word made her nervous.
Two weeks later, the scholarship winner was announced.
Aaliyah Carter.
She was in algebra when the email arrived.
She read the amount twice.
Twelve thousand dollars.
Her teacher noticed her expression.
“What happened?”
Aaliyah looked up.
“I think I just got a scholarship.”
The class applauded.
She called Tanya from the bathroom because she knew her mother would scream.
She was correct.
Tanya cried first.
Then screamed.
Then cried again.
“You earned that.”
“Mom.”
“You did.”
“I know.”
“I’m saying it anyway.”
By lunch, everyone knew.
Kelsey said nothing.
Imani avoided eye contact.
Brooke laughed loudly about something unrelated when Aaliyah passed.
Aaliyah sat with Marcus.
“You good?” he asked.
“Why wouldn’t I be?”
“Because Kelsey looks like she swallowed a battery.”
Aaliyah glanced toward her.
“Not my problem.”
Marcus raised his drink.
“Growth.”
Aaliyah smiled.
For several days, nothing happened.
That was almost worse.
Aaliyah caught herself waiting.
Then she became angry at herself for waiting.
The following Tuesday was unusually warm for March, and almost everyone ate outside.
Marcus had a student-council meeting during lunch.
Aaliyah bought fries, chicken, and a drink from the cafeteria, then carried the tray into the courtyard. Every table near the main doors was crowded, so she chose a metal table near the vending machines.
She sat alone.
Her phone buzzed.
A message from Tanya.
Scholarship forms signed. Don’t forget to bring home milk. Proud of you.
Aaliyah smiled.
She began replying.
Behind her, three figures entered the courtyard.
Kelsey.
Imani.
Brooke.
Students noticed them before Aaliyah did.
Some people had enough understanding of the situation to know the combination meant trouble.
Nobody warned her.
Kelsey walked directly toward the table.
Aaliyah sensed someone behind her and looked up.
All three were standing there.
She removed one earbud.
“Can I help you?”
Kelsey looked at her food.
“No.”
Brooke laughed.
Imani stood slightly behind them in a maroon varsity jacket, arms folded.
Aaliyah looked from one face to the next.
Then returned to her phone.
“Okay.”
Kelsey’s jaw tightened.
“You really think you won.”
Aaliyah looked up.
“The scholarship?”
“You know what I mean.”
“No, I really don’t.”
“You reported me, got everybody feeling sorry for you, and then magically you get twelve grand.”
Aaliyah placed her phone on the table.
“Nobody on the scholarship committee knows about the report.”
“That’s what they told you?”
“That’s how scholarship committees work.”
Brooke laughed.
“Listen to her.”
Aaliyah looked at her.
“Why are you even involved?”
Brooke stopped smiling.
Kelsey leaned over the table.
“You took something that should’ve been mine.”
Aaliyah stared at her.
“No.”
“Yes, you did.”
“You applied.”
“So did I.”
“They picked me.”
“You think that means you deserved it?”
Aaliyah stood.
Not aggressively.
Simply because she no longer wanted to remain seated while Kelsey leaned over her.
“I’m not doing this.”
Kelsey looked at Imani and Brooke.
Then back at Aaliyah.
“Of course not.”
Aaliyah picked up her phone.
Kelsey reached for the large paper drink cup on the table.
At first Aaliyah assumed she was moving it.
Then Kelsey tilted it.
Ice and soda poured directly across Aaliyah’s tray.
The drink soaked the fries.
Ran through the paper container.
Spread across the metal tabletop.
Brooke burst out laughing.
Imani smiled.
For several seconds, Aaliyah looked at the ruined food.
Her phone had been inches away.
The entire courtyard seemed to become quieter.
Kelsey set the empty cup down.
“Oops.”
Aaliyah slowly looked at her.
“You need to leave.”
Kelsey smiled.
“Or what?”
Aaliyah stepped away from the table.
“Nothing.”
That answer confused her.
“I’m going inside.”
Kelsey moved in front of her.
Aaliyah changed direction.
Brooke stepped sideways.
“Move.”
Brooke laughed.
Aaliyah looked toward Imani.
“You too?”
Imani shrugged.
“You got a big mouth.”
Aaliyah almost laughed.
“This is insane.”
Kelsey stepped close enough that their shoulders nearly touched.
“You should’ve kept my name out of yours.”
“You spent four months bothering me.”
“Because you walk around acting—”
“I walk around trying not to talk to you.”
Several people in the crowd laughed.
Kelsey’s expression darkened.
Again.
The laughter.
Always the laughter.
“Say it again.”
Aaliyah shook her head.
“I’m done.”
She tried to walk past.
Kelsey shoved her.
Aaliyah stumbled half a step.
A few students gasped.
She regained balance.
“Don’t touch me.”
Kelsey spread her arms.
“What?”
“You heard me.”
Brooke was laughing less now.
Imani moved closer.
Kelsey shoved Aaliyah again.
This time harder.
Aaliyah pushed Kelsey’s hands away.
“Stop.”
Kelsey swung.
The slap caught the side of Aaliyah’s shoulder more than her face.
Everything accelerated.
Aaliyah grabbed Kelsey’s wrist and pushed her backward.
Imani immediately rushed in.
She grabbed Aaliyah high around the shoulders.
Aaliyah twisted.
“Let go!”
Imani pulled harder.
Kelsey came forward again.
For one second, Aaliyah was fighting to keep her balance while two people grabbed at her.
Students began shouting.
Phones appeared everywhere.
Brooke moved into the circle.
Aaliyah drove one arm between herself and Imani and forced enough space to turn.
Imani grabbed again.
Aaliyah pushed her backward.
Imani stumbled into the vending-machine area.
Her shoulder hit the wall.
She came forward once more.
Aaliyah caught her arms and shoved her away.
Imani lost balance and dropped near the base of the machines.
Kelsey charged from the side.
Aaliyah turned just in time.
Kelsey swung wildly.
Aaliyah ducked.
The punch missed.
Brooke grabbed Aaliyah’s sleeve.
Aaliyah pulled free.
“GET OFF ME!”
For months, she had been careful.
Careful with her words.
Careful with hallways.
Careful with screenshots.
Careful not to become the angry person Kelsey was waiting for.
Now three girls were putting their hands on her in front of a courtyard full of witnesses.
There was nowhere left to walk.
Brooke stepped toward her again.
Aaliyah shoved her away.
Brooke stumbled into a table.
Kelsey rushed forward once more.
Her face had changed completely.
No smirk.
No joke.
She was furious now.
Aaliyah backed toward the table containing her ruined lunch.
“Kelsey, stop.”
She did not.
She swung.
Aaliyah moved sideways.
Kelsey’s momentum carried her forward.
Aaliyah caught her arm and shoulder and pushed her past.
Kelsey turned, lost her footing near the bench attached to the metal table, and crashed backward.
Her legs tangled against the seat.
She went down hard beside the table.
The courtyard erupted.
Imani was still crouched near the vending machines.
Brooke stood several feet away, no longer smiling.
Aaliyah remained standing.
Her cardigan had slipped from one shoulder.
Her hair was disordered.
She was breathing hard enough that her chest hurt.
She looked around.
Dozens of phones.
Dozens of faces.
Then she looked at the soaked lunch.
The paper cup lay on its side.
For some reason, that made her angrier than anything else.
Not the fight.
Not the insults.
The fact that ten minutes earlier she had been texting her mother about milk.
A teacher came running through the courtyard doors.
“EVERYBODY BACK UP!”
Another adult followed.
Students began scattering.
Kelsey sat up.
Immediately she pointed toward Aaliyah.
“She attacked me!”
Aaliyah almost laughed.
Of course.
Assistant Principal Hayes arrived seconds later.
His eyes moved across the scene.
Kelsey on the ground.
Imani near the vending machines.
Brooke crying.
Aaliyah standing.
“Aaliyah!”
She looked at him.
“Come with me.”
Kelsey shouted, “She jumped us!”
The crowd reacted instantly.
“No!”
“They started it!”
“Kelsey poured her drink!”
“I got everything!”
“Three of them went at her!”
Hayes raised both hands.
“Everybody quiet.”
Nobody listened.
A boy standing near the courtyard entrance held up his phone.
“I recorded from before the drink.”
Another girl raised hers.
“I have the whole fight.”
A third student said, “They wouldn’t let her leave.”
