He wasn’t entirely kidding.

Denise cried when Maya called her.

Marcus asked whether Jordan had chosen a good ring.

Denise hit his arm.

Wedding planning began six months later.

Guest lists caused the first problem.

Maya watched her mother carefully.

Denise noticed.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“You’re giving me that look.”

“What look?”

“The graduation look.”

Maya smiled slightly.

Denise sighed.

“I deserve that.”

She picked up the guest list.

“Your father is invited.”

Maya laughed.

“That’s a strong start.”

Denise smiled.

“And no, I will not be handling his invitation.”

“Growth.”

“Very funny.”

A few weeks later, Maya asked Samuel to meet her for lunch.

He arrived wearing work clothes.

She stared at him.

“You own normal clothes.”

“Allegedly.”

After they ordered, Maya handed him a small box.

Samuel frowned.

“What is this?”

“Open it.”

Inside was a tie clip.

Engraved on the back were five words.

You never stopped showing up.

Samuel read it twice.

His face changed.

“Maya.”

“I want you to walk me down the aisle.”

Samuel looked up.

“Of course.”

“And Marcus.”

Samuel paused.

Maya watched him.

“I want both of you.”

Samuel smiled.

“That makes sense.”

“You’re okay?”

“Why wouldn’t I be?”

“I don’t know.”

Samuel closed the box.

“Marcus helped raise you.”

Maya’s eyes filled.

“You really mean that?”

Samuel reached across the table.

“Baby girl, I told you years ago.”

She waited.

“Love isn’t a job opening.”

On Maya’s wedding day, Samuel stood on one side of her.

Marcus stood on the other.

Denise watched from the front row.

She cried before the music even began.

At the end of the aisle, Samuel kissed Maya’s forehead.

Marcus hugged her.

Then both men placed her hand in Jordan’s.

Later, during the reception, Denise approached Samuel.

He was standing alone near the patio.

“Can we talk?”

Samuel smiled.

“We are talking.”

“You know what I mean.”

He nodded.

Denise looked toward Maya.

She was dancing with Jordan.

“I never properly apologized.”

Samuel became quiet.

“For graduation.”

“You apologized to Maya.”

“I owe you one too.”

Samuel looked at her.

Denise took a breath.

“I used our marriage against you long after the marriage ended.”

Samuel said nothing.

“You hurt me.”

“I know.”

“I spent years feeling like you became a better person only after I stopped getting the benefit of it.”

Samuel looked down.

“That’s probably true.”

Denise continued.

“But I used that resentment to punish you as a father.”

Her eyes filled.

“That wasn’t fair.”

Samuel nodded slowly.

“No.”

“I’m sorry.”

Samuel studied the woman he had once expected to grow old beside.

So much history existed between them.

Love.
