Once the cabin stabilized, Laura checked the first class section before moving farther back. Mercer stopped her. "I want to know what exactly Captain Shaw put in the flight record."

Laura remained standing in the aisle. "The captain reviewed my report."

"That's not what I asked."

"The record reflects the seat reassignment and the cabin observations."

"Does it mention their behavior?"

"Yes."

"What does it say?"

Laura looked directly at him. "It says they objected to the reassignment, complied with the relocation request, and did not engage in disruptive conduct."

Mercer's expression tightened. "That is your interpretation."

"It is my observation."

"You're making this one-sided."

Laura shook her head. "I documented what I saw."

Mercer leaned slightly toward her. "And if something happens after we land?"

"Then whatever happens will be documented separately."

Cole looked away. Mercer said, "I want it noted that I warned them about possible security consequences."

Laura paused. "You want your warning added?"

"Yes."

Maya's request had already caused Laura to preserve the earlier exchange, but she entered the additional note anyway. "Done."

Mercer appeared satisfied until Laura added: "I also noted that no security order had been issued by the crew at the time."

Mercer stared at her. "You always add commentary like that?"

"When it affects the meaning of the report." Laura continued down the aisle.

Cole let out a slow breath. "You keep asking people to write things down, and every time they do, it gets worse for you."

Mercer turned toward him. "It gets worse only if you start treating passengers like investigators."

"I'm treating the record like a record."

Mercer looked at his phone again. A short time later, the seat belt sign was turned off. Mercer stood and walked toward the rear cabin.

Cole caught his sleeve lightly. "Where are you going?"

"Restroom."

"Then go to the restroom."

Mercer pulled his arm free and continued down the aisle. When he reached Maya's row, he stopped. Grace noticed him first. Maya looked up.

Mercer kept his voice low enough not to disturb the surrounding passengers. "You seem very confident right now."

Maya said nothing.

"When we land, you may understand why I warned you."

"Warned me about what?"

"About turning a simple request into an aviation security issue."

Maya looked at him steadily. "You were the only person who called it a security issue."

"I'm a police officer. I understand how these things develop."

"You're an off-duty passenger."

Mercer's jaw tightened. "That doesn't erase my training."

"It also doesn't give you authority over this aircraft."

Grace looked between them. Mercer said, "When there's a report attached to your name, you may see it differently."

Maya responded without raising her voice: "Only if the record is true."

Mercer stared at her.

Maya continued, "If you make a report, make sure every part of it can be compared with the crew log, the seat record, the witness statements, and the timestamps."

For the first time, Mercer looked less certain. Grace did not speak.

Maya added, "You threatened us before any security incident existed. Laura documented that you requested our seats while you were off duty. Holloway documented that we moved when the crew asked us to. That was documented, too."

Mercer stepped closer to the edge of the row. "You think paperwork protects you?"

"I think facts protect themselves when people record them accurately."

Mercer looked at her for another moment, then continued toward the restroom.

Grace waited until he was out of earshot. "Why did you tell him all that?"

"Because I want him to know the record already exists."

"What if that makes him more careful?"

"Then maybe he stops."

Grace looked toward the front. "And if he doesn't?"

Maya rested her hands on her lap. "Then whatever he does next becomes part of the same record."

Mercer returned to first class several minutes later. Cole watched him sit down and open his phone again.

"You talked to her."

"Yes."

"Why?"

Mercer ignored the question. Cole saw a report form on the screen. "Dan..."

Mercer began typing.

"What are you filing?"

"An incident notification."

"For what incident?"

Mercer kept his eyes on the screen. "Potential escalation."

Cole stared at him. "There was no escalation."

"There could be when we land."

"That's not how reports work."

Mercer finally looked at him. "That's exactly how they work. You document risk before it becomes a problem."

Cole leaned closer. "You're documenting a problem that doesn't exist because you don't like the record that already does."

Mercer turned back to the phone. The report identified Maya Williams as confrontational toward law enforcement. It described Grace Turner as agitated and noted a possible need for security follow-up after arrival.

Cole read part of the draft. "Take that out." Mercer continued typing. "She wasn't agitated. She was nervous. That's not the same thing."

Mercer submitted the report. Cole stared at the confirmation on the screen. "You just made this bigger."

Mercer placed the phone on the armrest. "No, I made sure our version exists, too."

From several rows behind, Maya could not see the report, but she saw Laura receive a new message on her tablet. Laura read it once, then looked toward first class. Her expression changed. The seat dispute had ended before takeoff; the official dispute had just begun.

Laura waited until she reached Maya and Grace before speaking. She kept her tablet close to her side and lowered her voice. "I need to ask both of you a few questions for the flight record."

Grace looked concerned. "About what?"

"About the exchange before departure."

Maya nodded. "Go ahead."

Laura looked at Grace first. "Did either of you threaten Sergeant Mercer or Officer Cole?"

"No," Grace said.
