“Maya stays.”

Richard nodded.

“Agreed.”

“No discipline for the accusation because there was no accusation.”

“Agreed.”

“Coaching on missing-property procedure.”

“Fine.”

“Ben gets coaching for not reporting the holder.”

“Yes.”

“We contact Victoria.”

Richard exhaled.

“And say?”

“That we reviewed the event.”

“The item was never on her table.”

“Maya did not accuse her of theft.”

“We regret that the question made her feel accused.”

“But we will not terminate the employee.”

Richard stared.

“That will end the account.”

“Maybe.”

“A hundred thousand a year.”

“Maybe more.”

Aaron looked at him.

“Then decide the price.”

Richard’s face hardened.

“That is easy for you to say.”

Aaron sat back.

“No.”

“It isn’t.”

Richard stopped.

Aaron continued.

“If she walks, staffing gets tighter.”

“Bonuses shrink.”

“Hours may get cut.”

“I manage those people.”

“I know what revenue means.”

“So do not tell me I’m making a moral point with somebody else’s money.”

Richard looked down.

Fair.

Aaron softened.

“But if her business depends on having firing authority over employees, then she does not have an account.”

“She has management control.”

Silence.

Richard stared at the table.

Then:

“I hate when you’re right.”

“I’m not always.”

“Today is bad enough.”

They drafted the message.

Not email.

Phone call first.

Richard insisted.

At 3:15, he called Victoria.

Aaron sat in the office.

Speakerphone.

“Victoria.”

“Richard.”

Her voice was cold.

“I expected to hear from you sooner.”

“I wanted to review everything first.”

“I told you what happened.”

“Yes.”

“We also reviewed security footage and interviewed staff.”

A pause.

“Security footage?”

“Yes.”

Victoria’s tone changed.

“I hope you are not implying I lied.”

“No.”

Richard looked toward Aaron.

“I’m saying the footage shows the missing table marker never reached your table.”

Silence.

“It was accidentally wrapped into linen by a busser before Maya approached you.”

Victoria said nothing.

Richard continued.

“We also reviewed Maya’s interaction.”

“There is no audio.”

“But nothing indicates she reached into your belongings, touched your table items, or attempted to prevent you from leaving.”

“She accused me.”

“She asked whether a missing marker might have been moved to your table.”

“That is an accusation.”

“No.”

Richard spoke carefully.

“That is a question.”

Victoria’s voice hardened.

“You were not there.”

“No.”

“Neither was Aaron.”

“No.”

“I was.”

“Yes.”

“And I know how she looked at me.”

There.

Not words.

Interpretation.

Richard said:

“I believe you felt accused.”

“I also believe that is different from Maya accusing you.”

Victoria laughed.

“So this is your position.”

“Yes.”

“And she remains employed?”

“Yes.”

Silence.

Then:

“I see.”

Richard did not fill it.

Victoria continued.
