Time for another out of this world story from r/space. Today on r/space, proof that emotional affairs don’t always start with a co-worker from accounting. Sometimes they start in an Instagram DM with someone so famous they probably have an assistant ignoring your messages for them.
I’ve tried starting an affair with a celebrity. I kicked her out and exposed her to her family. I want to start this off by saying I know how this is going to sound to some of you. I’ve heard every variation of “she didn’t even cheat” and “everyone has crushes” from people in my life. I understand where they’re coming from, but the thing is I don’t agree. When you’re married, you have to keep your crushes under control, even if the other person is some celebrity they don’t realistically have a chance with.
My name doesn’t matter. I’m 31. My wife, Andrea, is 30. We’ve been together for six years and married for three. We don’t have any kids, though we plan to start trying in a year. I used to feel like I waited too long for kids, but now I’m glad we didn’t start earlier. Andrea has always been into celebrity culture. When we watch movies together, she always knows the names of every single big star on screen. It doesn’t matter if they’re from the US or New Zealand. If they’re moderately famous, she knows their name and who they are married to or getting divorced from. She watches every award show with full investment and can tell you all the nominees from every category. I always found it endearing. Until about a year ago when she got into a particular actor.
I won’t name him, but he’s mid-tier famous and got his big break on some show in its second or third season. At first, she started mentioning him the same way she brought up other celebrities. She’d tell me random facts about him or some silly thing he said in an interview. I didn’t think anything of it. Why would I? She liked actors and he was just another actor. But she never told me outright that she had a crush on him. That was something I started to figure out myself over the next few months.
It was little things at first. We were watching a movie and he happened to be in it. The moment he came on screen, Andrea’s face lit up and she leaned in. She wasn’t leaning in like she was trying to pay more attention to a movie. She was looking at him exactly how she used to look at me when we started dating. Afterwards, she spent the next few minutes talking about how talented he was. After that, she brought him up more than usual. She mentioned him all the time. Random conversations found a way of circling back to him. When we were trying to make vacation plans, she mentioned that he’d recently visited Italy. I commented one day that she was obsessed with him. She just laughed and said she was just interested in his professional accomplishments. That should have comforted me, but I didn’t fully buy it. At that point, I was starting to suspect that this was more than a run-of-the-mill celebrity crush. But I never guessed just how far she was taking it.
That happened when she started showing the more classic signs of an affair. We’d always been the kind of couple that’s all over each other. She used to say we were a touchy couple. We always held hands when we were walking or driving. When we sat on the couch, she’d lean into me and I’d have an arm around her. It felt unnatural for us to be close to each other and not touching in some way. That’s why it was so noticeable when she started angling her body away from me when I sat beside her to watch a movie one night. It wasn’t an exaggerated motion. It was so subtle that I almost thought she didn’t notice it herself. But when it kept happening, I knew it wasn’t something unconscious. It was a pattern now. And once I noticed that, I started noticing more things.
She started charging her phone on the nightstand on her side of the bed instead of on the kitchen counter, which had been her routine for years. She always had her phone in her hands, too. It seemed like she was always texting someone and when I walked in the room, she stopped typing immediately. If I got closer, she’d turn off her screen. It wasn’t hard evidence, but I knew Andrea. I was familiar with her habits and too much was changing too quickly. I knew there had to be something behind it. Something had changed in our marriage and I wanted to find out what.
I didn’t confront her right away, though. Partly because I didn’t have anything concrete, and partly because a part of me didn’t want to be right. I was starting to suspect that she was having an affair, and I really didn’t want to face the possibility. But I also knew I couldn’t ignore it. It took a while for me to decide on how I was going to approach it. I trusted Andrea and considered just going right to her and talking about it. It’s how I would have preferred to handle things, but I also knew it was probably a bad idea. She wasn’t just going to admit to it if she was really having an affair. That left me with the option of going through her phone myself. It felt like a breach of trust, though I knew I had a good reason for it. Andrea’s odd behavior felt like probable cause. If she was really having an affair, I would find out for sure on her phone. At the very least, I’d find out who she really was texting all the time.
So one night, when she was in the shower, I picked up her phone. I’m not proud of this, but I won’t apologize for it, either. I’ve never done anything like this in all of our time together, but I also think that when your partner starts acting like they’re hiding something, there’s nothing wrong with trying to uncover things however you can. Her phone wasn’t locked, which was a surprise. I’d expected a new passcode. I went right to Instagram first. It was her favorite social media platform, so it seemed like the right place to start looking. My instinct turned out to be right. I went to her DMs and noticed that her thread with the actor was right at the top. For a second, I was stunned. I thought it was just a fan page she’d been commenting on, or a group chat about a show. But when I clicked it, I saw that it was his actual official account. That was weird, but it didn’t really mean anything. I’d heard about people using celebrities’ DMs as a diary or a notepad. Some people sent messages of what they wanted to say to them, knowing that they’d never actually respond. I hoped Andrea was doing something similar here. She wasn’t.
I scrolled all the way to the beginning. The messages went back nine months. The first few were short, completely normal fan stuff. She loved him in the show. He was so talented, and she hoped he kept getting great roles. A bit odd coming from a grown woman, but harmless in the end. He, or someone on his social media team, liked one of the messages. That was all, but it seemed to encourage her. She started gushing about how happy she was that he’d read her message, and how she was such a huge fan. I wanted to put the phone down and convince myself that the rest of it was just like that, but I kept scrolling. The messages started getting longer. She was telling him about her day. She’d talk about how things were going at work, and how things were going with me. Now it was getting a lot weirder. It was like a one-sided conversation where she was spilling her deepest feelings. I didn’t think it was healthy, but it wasn’t infidelity yet.
And then the tone shifted again. It started with a message that said, “I know you probably won’t see these, but if you do, please respond.” And then she started confessing her feelings for him. I stared at that message for a while. The sudden shift was jarring. Before that, everything had been strange, but explainable. It was just a woman processing her feelings in an odd, private way. I thought it was weird, but it wasn’t a deal breaker or anything. Now she was trying to get him to notice her, and it got worse. She said she thought about him more than she should. She knew it didn’t make sense, but she couldn’t shake him. She claimed she hadn’t felt this way about anyone before. That was a blow. I was her husband, and she was gushing to some random celebrity about how she’d never loved anyone like she loved him. I put down the phone for a moment while I processed that. After a few minutes, I picked it back up and kept reading.
Things got worse. The way she wrote to him started feeling like how she wrote to me when we just started dating. She told him everything. She even complained about arguments we had, or days when I did something that upset her. And then it became clear to me that a part of her was hoping he would see this. She wanted to see where this would actually go. She admitted that she’d found his phone number leaked on a forum, but by the time she called it, it was inactive. She said the idea of being able to speak to him in person had made her so excited she almost passed out. Again, things got worse. There were hundreds of messages, so I can’t get into all of them, but she started sending some suggestive texts. Maybe she thought she could seduce him into replying to her. She said she wanted to get into a room with him alone so she could show him how much she cared about him. It was pretty obvious to me what she meant by that. And if it wasn’t, she made it clearer when she started sending pictures. First, they were innocent pictures of her face, but they started getting more provocative. Eventually, she was sending him pictures of herself in her underwear. She hadn’t fallen to the level of sending nudes, but it was already bad enough.
The worst part was in the most recent messages. She admitted that she was in a happy marriage. But she claimed she would leave me in a heartbeat if he came her way, and she was trying everything she could to make that happen. She admitted that she tried to get his phone number again. She’d even paid someone who claimed he had it, but she’d been scammed. She even sent him our home address, hoping he’d come and meet her here. I’d read enough. I sat there for half an hour screenshotting every message to send to myself. Then I woke Andrea up. I probably should have waited until the next morning, but I couldn’t. I was furious, and I wanted answers right away. She sat there looking confused and asked why I woke her. I held her phone out to her with the screen open on one of her messages to him. She looked at it, then looked at me. She didn’t ask what was wrong or try to explain herself. She just sat up against the headboard and pulled her knees to her chest.
I told her to explain it to me. I was mad enough to yell, but I tried to keep my voice level. I knew if I started shouting, I wouldn’t be able to calm myself down. Her voice was small when she said, “I don’t know where to start.” I helped her out and told her to start by explaining why she was trying to flirt with an actor. What followed was one of the strangest conversations of my life. She said it started off like a game at first. She knew there was no chance of him actually sending a message, but it was just for fun. But then he liked one of her messages and she felt like someone was on the other end. I pointed out that it meant she sent all those messages expecting him to see them. She nodded. When I started pacing around the room, she said it was just a celebrity crush and it didn’t mean anything. I unlocked my phone and started reading from the messages I’d sent to myself. I read the messages where she told him every sexual act she wanted to do to him as well as the ones where she told him how she loved him more than her husband. She started crying. I said it was more than just a crush. Sure, there was probably no chance of her ever actually getting in touch with him, but it wasn’t about that. It was about the intent. She’d been making legitimate efforts to contact him so she could tell him how she felt. She said she didn’t mean everything she said. She was just venting her feelings and trying to make sense of them. I reminded her that she’d spent actual money trying to get his phone number. She sent her address to him, a complete stranger, hoping he’d come and see her. It was insane. She just sat there crying with her face between her knees. I pointed out that he probably didn’t even handle his social media himself. For all she knew, there was some 20-year-old social media manager who had pictures of her in her underwear. There was no saying how many people had seen those pictures at this point. She just cried harder. I told her to sleep in the guest room for the rest of the night. She didn’t argue. She got up silently and left.
The next morning I told her I wanted a separation. I hadn’t fully decided on divorce, but things were probably going to end up that way. She said she knew she’d messed up badly, but she wanted to fix it. She felt like she deserved a chance because she hadn’t actually done anything. I said the only reason she hadn’t done anything was that she couldn’t physically reach him and not for lack of trying. I told her that there was a point where I was still ready to forgive her and work through things, but that changed when she started confessing her love and trying to buy his phone number. I haven’t filed for divorce yet, but she moved out. I can’t look at her right now and I need some time alone to figure out what to do next. I’ve asked some friends and family for advice and a lot of them told me to overlook it. As far as they’re concerned, nothing happened. When I asked what they would say if I were in the DMs with some actress, they said that was different. The double standard makes me sick. I can’t lie though. The feedback I’ve gotten from people in my life makes me feel like I really might be taking it too far. That’s why I wanted to share my story here and see if anyone else thinks I might be overreacting for considering divorce over this.
Update. I can’t thank you all enough for the support and advice you all gave me. I felt like I was going crazy when people I knew started calling me immature for kicking Andrea out over some texts. I was glad to see the majority of you here agreed that what she did was dead serious. Someone commented something that really stuck with me, that the people telling me to overlook it were applying a standard to my marriage that they would never apply to their own. That helped me get my head on straight and do the right thing. So here’s where things stand. Andrea and I are divorced now. I filed two days after my first post. I needed some time to think and go over the information I had. I don’t like to rush big decisions. Andrea didn’t take it well when I told her. I think she was holding on to the idea that the separation was temporary, that I was just hurt, and I’d come back around once I had space. When she realized I was serious about ending things, she broke down. She cried and asked me to reconsider one more time. She said she loved me and didn’t want to throw away six years over something that hadn’t actually gone anywhere. She told me she’d already made an appointment with the therapist, and that she deleted all her social media. She was ready to do whatever it took. I told her I’d made up my mind and I wasn’t going to change it. She’d done too much wrong for me to overlook. There wasn’t a single moment where she’d done something wrong. She’d made a series of bad decisions and tried to hide them. Even if I managed to forgive her, I’d never be able to trust her again.
The divorce itself was as unpleasant as everyone who’s been through one told me it would be. It was slow, expensive, and emotionally exhausting. Andrea didn’t make the process more difficult than it had to be. She was not vindictive about the settlement. I think she felt guilty and didn’t want to fight me on the details. We divided things fairly and got the divorce done as soon as we could. The one moment that stands out in the aftermath came a couple of weeks after the divorce. Andrea’s aunt, a woman I’d always gotten along with, called me out of nowhere. She’d heard Andrea’s version of events and gotten herself worked up over it. She told me I was cruel and that I’d thrown away a good woman over an active imagination. She said I ought to be ashamed of myself for destroying her niece’s life over a harmless obsession. I didn’t say much. I was tired of explaining to people why what Andrea did was wrong. So I decided to let her see and judge for herself. I asked her if she’d like to see some of the messages Andrea had sent. She said yes, in the tone of someone who expected that they were about to be proven right. I forwarded some of the heavier messages to her. Nothing explicit. I didn’t want to open myself up to any legal trouble. Just the ones where she talked about how she’d leave me in a heartbeat. The ones where she told him what she wanted to do to him. And where she admitted to sending him our address and why. There was a long silence on the other end, and then she told me she had to go. She didn’t apologize, and I didn’t expect her to. But the tone of her voice afterwards told me she’d been humbled. That was enough for me.
I found out from Andrea later that her aunt had shared those messages with most of their family. Now everyone understood exactly what she’d done. Suddenly, they weren’t so firmly on her side anymore. Andrea was mad at me for sending the messages to her aunt. She said the least I could have done was protect her honor. I asked what honor she was referring to because a woman with honor wouldn’t have done what she did. We weren’t together anymore, so I didn’t need to shield her from the consequences of her actions. So when her aunt came trying to make me the bad guy for her actions, I set the record straight, and I didn’t regret it for a second. Andrea started cursing, and I ended the call. I didn’t have to listen to her anymore.
It’s been a few months since everything was finalized. I still haven’t heard from Andrea since our last discussion. I’m living alone in the apartment, which is taking some getting used to. The first few weeks after she left were the hardest. It wasn’t just about losing someone you loved. The hard part was finding out that they weren’t who you thought they were the whole time. I think I’m going to be single for a while after this. I’m not looking to date anyone and I have no plans to change that anytime soon. I have to make sure I work on myself fully first so I’ll be in a good headspace for the next relationship, whenever that happens. I’m not old yet. I still have time. To everyone who commented on my post over the past few months, I can’t thank you enough. You helped me trust my own judgment at a moment when people were telling me I was wrong. I wasn’t. Sometimes the intent behind someone’s actions carries a lot more meaning than the outcome. A crush is normal. What she did went way beyond that. She wasn’t just admiring an actor, she was trying to build a connection with him. She told him she loved him more than me, said she’d leave me if he gave her a chance, tried to track down his phone number, sent him our home address, and even started sending provocative photos. That’s not harmless fantasy anymore. That’s intent. I also don’t think you were wrong for questioning your own judgment after everyone around you minimized it. It’s easy for people to say, “It’s just a celebrity,” because they focus on the outcome instead of the behavior. If those exact same messages had been sent to a co-worker or an ex, or someone she actually knew, nobody would be defending it. You ended it because your wife spent months choosing the fantasy over the real person she had waiting for her at home.
