He looked at this scene for about 20 seconds. Then he went back to his sketch. He drew a line that had nothing to do with the bookshelves. He looked at it for a moment. Then he drew a small rectangle beside the line with a chair beside it.

He was not thinking about it consciously. His hands were doing something his brain hadn't caught up to yet. He drew a second chair. He drew a small window above the rectangle. He drew a child's table in the corner.

He stared at the page. He put the pencil down. That was the first time he understood in a complete and physical and entirely certain way that what he was building in this house was not a temporary arrangement. It was not a careful experiment or a slow exploration or a 3-month trial. It was the actual shape of his future, and it had been taking form around him while he'd been busy pretending to sand boards that didn't need sanding.

He did not say any of this out loud. He went back to the bookshelves, but he kept the page. What he could not have predicted was Marcus. Marcus Hail taught 8th grade science at the middle school two blocks from Lily's elementary. He was 38, divorced, easylooking, in the way of men who don't have to work at being easylooking, and he had apparently been having coffee with Clare every Thursday morning for the past 2 months as part of a curriculum collaboration between their schools.

Ethan did not know about Marcus until the second Friday in December when he stopped by Cla's school to drop off her laptop charger. She'd left it at the house that morning. And the school secretary, a cheerful woman named Gloria, who had known Ethan since Lily started kindergarten, looked up and said, "Oh, is Clare still having coffee with Marcus? You might have to wait. " Ethan stood at the front desk. "Marcus," he said.

Gloria looked at him the way people look at you when they realize they have said something that illuminated a gap they didn't know existed. Marcus Hail from the middle school. They meet on Thursday mornings usually, but he stopped by today because of the curriculum thing. She was already looking back at her computer. She shouldn't be long.

He thanked her. He sat down in one of the chairs in the front office. He held the laptop charger in both hands and he did not do anything dramatic. He was not the kind of person who did dramatic things. But he sat in that chair and the feeling that moved through him was so specific and so sudden that it was almost clarifying the cold, sharp arrival of something he recognized as jealousy.

Not the paranoid kind, not the possessive kind, but the particular kind that happens when you understand without warning and with complete certainty that someone matters to you more than you have been saying out loud. He sat in the chair. He waited. 6 minutes later, Clare came down the hallway with a man he'd never met. Tall, dark-haired, carrying a folder of papers and laughing at something she'd just said.

She stopped when she saw Ethan. The laugh didn't die on her face so much as transform. It went from open to careful in the space of 1 second. And he saw her read the situation with the speed of someone who is very good at reading rooms. Ethan, she said, you didn't have to.

Your charger, he said. He stood up. He held it out. She crossed the hallway and took it. The man Marcus stayed a few feet back, professionally polite, not hovering.

Thanks, Clare said. She was watching Ethan's face. "Gloria said you were in a meeting," he said. His voice was entirely even. He was proud of that curriculum coordination, she said.

She turned slightly. "This is Marcus Hail. He teaches science at "I know," Ethan said. He looked at Marcus. "Ethan Walker, Lily's dad. " Marcus smiled.

"Genuine no agenda in it. I've heard a lot about Lily. Clare says she's got a serious scientific mind. She does. Ethan said there was a beat.

Not hostile, just present. Then Clare said, "I'll walk you out. " She walked him to the front door. The glass door swung shut behind them. On the other side, Gloria was suddenly very interested in her computer screen. In the small vestibule between the inner and outer doors, Clare said, "It's not what your face is doing right now. " "My face isn't doing anything," he said.

Ethan, "I'm fine," he said. "We've had coffee twice," she said. About the fifth grade science unit, that's all. "There's nothing. " "I know," he said. "You don't look like you know. " He stopped.

He looked at the door for a second. Then he said, "I'm not. I trust you. That's not the thing. " "Then what is the thing? " He turned to face her. "The thing," he said carefully, "is that I walked in there and someone mentioned a man I'd never heard of, and I felt something that I didn't know I was capable of feeling anymore.

And I don't know exactly what to do with that, but it's not about you. It's about me. " He paused. I didn't know I was that far in until just now. Clare was very still. "How far? " she said.

He looked at her steadily. "Far enough that sitting in that chair for 6 minutes felt like a very long time," he said. She looked at him. Then she did something he had not expected. She took the laptop charger and she put her free hand against his chest, flat, steady, just for a second, and she said, "You should have said something sooner. " "I know," he said.

I'm not going anywhere, she said. I know, he said again. Marcus is just I know, he said a third time. I know what Marcus is. I know what you are.

I just I needed a minute. She dropped her hand. She looked at him. Have your minute, she said. Then come home.

She went back inside. He stood in the vestibule for approximately 30 seconds. Then he walked to his truck and he sat in it and he understood with a clarity that did not require any additional analysis that the word she had used home was not a slip. It was precise. It was intentional and it had gone through him like a current.
