"Fly This Jet—Then We’ll Talk!" CEO Mocked Single Dad — One Takeoff Exposed His Shocking Past
The boy appeared ten minutes before they closed my husband's casket.
I remember the exact moment because my daughter Olivia had just reached forward to straighten Michael's blue tie.
He was fifty years old.
He had been my husband for twenty-two years.
And six days earlier, he had dropped dead from a massive heart attack in the parking lot behind his office.
There had been no warning.
No final conversation.
No unfinished sentence I could turn into something meaningful.
One minute Michael Bennett was texting me to ask whether I wanted Thai food for dinner.
Forty-seven minutes later, a doctor was telling me they couldn't bring him back.
By the morning of the funeral, I had survived almost entirely by completing tasks.
Choose the casket.
Call the church.
Find Michael's navy suit.
Make sure our seventeen-year-old daughter ate something.
Make sure our eleven-year-old son, Evan, understood that he did not have to touch his father's body if he didn't want to.
Thank people.
Nod.
Breathe.
Repeat.
Then a boy I had never seen before walked into the funeral home wearing my husband's watch.
He was tall for fourteen, thin, with dark hair hanging over his forehead and a black jacket that was slightly too large for him.
A woman followed three steps behind.
I recognized her.
Not immediately.
But I knew I had seen her face somewhere.
She was around forty.
Blonde.
Carefully dressed.
Terrified.
The boy stopped when he saw the casket.
Whatever his mother had prepared him to say disappeared.
His mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
Then he whispered one word.
“Dad.”
My daughter heard it.
So did I.
Olivia slowly turned away from the casket.
“What did you say?”
The boy looked at her.
His eyes were already filling.
The woman stepped forward.
“Caleb.”
He ignored her.
He was staring at Michael.
“Dad said he'd call me Sunday.”
My body went cold.
Olivia looked at me.
“Mom?”
I couldn't answer.
The woman reached for the boy's arm.
“Maybe we should go.”
“No.”
The word came from my husband's older brother.
Andrew Bennett had been standing near the doorway speaking to the funeral director.
Now he was staring at the woman.
And whatever I was feeling, Andrew looked worse.
His face had gone almost gray.
“Lauren?”
The woman froze.
That was when I remembered her.
Lauren Pierce.
Fifteen years earlier, she had worked as a receptionist at Bennett Brothers Supply, the building-material company Michael and Andrew inherited from their father.
She had only worked there for a year.
Maybe less.
I had met her twice at Christmas parties.
Then she disappeared.
At least I thought she had.
Andrew walked toward her.
“What are you doing here?”
Lauren lifted her chin.
“Michael was his father.”
The room seemed to become very quiet.
Andrew stared at Caleb.
Then at Lauren.
“No.”
Lauren's voice cracked.
“Yes.”
Olivia stepped backward.
My son Evan was across the room with my mother.
He hadn't heard yet.
Thank God.
I looked at the watch on Caleb's wrist.
Stainless steel.
Black face.
A thin scratch beneath the number four.
I had bought that watch for Michael on our twentieth anniversary.
He told me he lost it six months ago.
I looked at Lauren.
“Why is he wearing my husband's watch?”
Caleb immediately reached for the buckle.
“He gave it to me.”
His voice was defensive.
“I didn't steal it.”
I looked at the boy properly for the first time.
Fourteen.
Michael had supposedly lost the watch six months earlier.
Michael had been leaving work late for about six months.
He said the company was going through a difficult expansion.
He had begun taking Saturday morning drives.
He said he needed time alone after his blood pressure diagnosis.
My brain began doing what grieving brains should never have to do.
Rewriting memories.
Lauren touched Caleb's shoulder.
“Michael gave it to him after his birthday.”
Olivia turned to me.
“Mom, what's happening?”
I looked at Andrew.
He refused to meet my eyes.
That was the moment I knew there was truth somewhere inside the nightmare.
Not necessarily Lauren's entire truth.
But enough.
“How old is he?”
Lauren swallowed.
“Fourteen.”
I calculated without wanting to.
Michael and I had been married eight years when Caleb was born.
Olivia had been two.
I had been pregnant with Evan several years later, so there was no convenient separation in our marriage to explain anything.
“How long?”
Lauren shook her head.
“This isn't the place.”
“You brought a fourteen-year-old boy to my husband's funeral and had him call Michael Dad in front of our daughter.”
“I didn't want him to find out from a newspaper.”
“Find out what?”
“That Michael died.”
I stared at her.
“How long did my husband know about him?”
Caleb answered.
“My whole life.”
Something inside me broke.
Olivia made a sound behind me.
Not quite a sob.
I turned.
She had gone completely white.
“Mom.”
I took her hand.
Then Caleb said something that made everything worse.
“Dad was going to tell you.”
I slowly looked back at him.
“When?”
Caleb's eyes dropped.
“This week.”
Lauren closed her eyes.
I almost laughed.
Of course.
The dead always seem to have been planning to confess next week.
Andrew stepped between us.
“This needs to stop.”
I looked at him.
“You knew.”
“No.”
“Don't lie to me today.”
“I didn't know Michael was seeing them.”
Lauren's head snapped toward him.
“Seeing us?”
Andrew's expression changed.
She stared at him.
“You think that's what this is?”
“Lauren.”
“You really don't know.”
He looked almost frightened.
That was strange.
I should have focused on it.
But my husband was ten feet away in a casket and a boy wearing his watch had just called him Dad.
I was not capable of noticing every clue.
Lauren pulled a folded piece of paper from her purse.
“I wasn't going to do this here.”
I didn't take it.
“What is it?”
“A letter Michael wrote Caleb.”
“Recently?”
“Last month.”
My daughter stepped toward her.
“Give it to me.”
“Olivia.”
“No, Mom.”
