Every Woman Wanted the Lonely Cowboy — Until One Fearless Woman Spoke the Truth
Every Woman Wanted the Lonely Cowboy — Until One Fearless Woman Spoke the Truth
Olivia covered her mouth.
Andrew's face turned red.
“Once.”
Lauren nodded.
“Twice.”
“You told me you were on birth control.”
“That is not the part of this story you should be worried about.”
I stared at my brother-in-law.
He had been married to his wife, Denise, for twenty-six years.
Their daughter Madison was twenty-one.
Andrew had spent the previous afternoon judging his dead brother for having a secret son.
“Did Michael know?”
Lauren shook her head.
“Not at first.”
Andrew started pacing.
“This happened fifteen years ago. We were drunk. It was a mistake.”
“You were married.”
He looked at me.
“So was Michael.”
The sentence hit like a slap.
He knew it immediately.
“Sarah, I didn't mean—”
“No. You did.”
I turned to Lauren.
“When did Michael learn Andrew might be Caleb's father?”
“Five months ago.”
I stared.
The same period Michael claimed he lost the watch.
The late evenings.
The Saturday drives.
Something had happened five months ago.
“How?”
Lauren looked at Olivia.
“DNA.”
Olivia frowned.
“What DNA?”
“Caleb did one of those ancestry kits.”
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
A Christmas gift.
A school project.
One of those harmless modern things capable of detonating old families.
Lauren continued.
“Michael bought it for him because Caleb had been asking about the Bennett side of the family.”
Andrew sat down.
His face was pale again.
Lauren said, “When the results came back, Michael's niece Madison appeared as a close relative.”
Andrew interrupted.
“She is a Bennett. Of course she did.”
Lauren looked at him.
“At twenty-four point six percent shared DNA.”
Nobody spoke.
Even I knew that was too high for ordinary first cousins.
Olivia took out her phone.
“What would that make them?”
“Don't,” Andrew said.
She ignored him.
A few seconds later, she looked up.
“Half siblings can share around twenty-five percent.”
Andrew closed his eyes.
My heartbeat accelerated.
If Michael were Caleb's biological father, Madison would be Caleb's first cousin.
If Andrew were Caleb's biological father, Madison would be his half-sister.
Lauren said quietly, “Michael saw the same thing.”
I stared at her.
“What did he do?”
“He confronted me.”
“And you told him?”
“I told him the truth.”
Andrew laughed bitterly.
“Your version of it.”
Lauren turned.
“My version?”
“You told Michael the kid was his for fourteen years.”
“I believed he was more likely to be Michael's.”
“You believed Michael would take responsibility.”
Lauren's face hardened.
That sentence landed differently.
“What does that mean?” I asked.
Andrew said nothing.
Lauren looked at him.
“Tell her.”
He stood again.
“I'm leaving.”
Olivia moved before I did.
She stepped into the doorway.
“You're not.”
Andrew stared at her.
She was seventeen.
Half his size.
But she did not move.
“My dad is dead,” she said. “If you know why he spent the last five months lying to us, you're going to tell us.”
Andrew looked at me.
I said nothing.
He sat back down.
Lauren's voice became quieter.
“When I found out I was pregnant, I told Andrew first.”
I turned toward him.
His face gave him away.
“He knew?”
“He knew there was a possibility.”
“Before Michael?”
“Yes.”
Andrew slammed his palm onto the table.
“She said it was probably Michael's.”
“Because you told me exactly what would happen if it was yours.”
Lauren's eyes filled.
“You said Denise would leave you. You said your father would remove you from the company. You said I'd lose my job. You told me if Michael was willing to believe Caleb was his, I should let him.”
Olivia whispered, “You knew Dad might not be his father.”
Andrew looked at her.
“I was twenty-nine years old and terrified.”
“My dad was thirty-five.”
“He made his own choices.”
“He raised your kid.”
“We don't know that.”
Lauren laughed.
“Michael did.”
Andrew looked at her.
“What?”
She reached into the purse again.
This time she removed a white envelope.
“I brought this because I assumed Sarah deserved to see it.”
She handed it to me.
The return address belonged to a private laboratory.
The date was four months earlier.
I opened it.
PATERNITY EXCLUSION: MICHAEL BENNETT is excluded as the biological father of CALEB PIERCE.
I read the sentence twice.
Then again.
Michael was not Caleb's biological father.
Olivia began crying.
I expected relief.
Some insane part of me thought learning my husband had not fathered another woman's child might make something less terrible.
It did not.
Because Michael had spent fourteen years believing he had.
And during those fourteen years, he had secretly been a father to that boy.
My daughter whispered, “Did Dad stop seeing Caleb after this?”
Lauren shook her head.
“No.”
“Why not?”
“He said DNA couldn't erase fourteen years.”
I looked at the letter from Michael again.
I have failed you by making you live in the hidden half of my life.
He wasn't talking about biology.
He was talking about shame.
I looked at Andrew.
“Did Michael confront you?”
Andrew nodded.
“When?”
“About four months ago.”
“What did he say?”
Andrew hesitated.
“That Caleb was probably mine.”
“Probably?”
“He didn't have my DNA.”
Lauren said, “He didn't need much imagination.”
Andrew glared at her.
I leaned toward him.
“What did my husband ask you to do?”
“Take a test.”
“And?”
“I refused.”
“Why?”
“My wife didn't know.”
I stared.
“You let your brother secretly raise a child for fourteen years because you didn't want your wife to know you cheated?”
“It wasn't like that.”
Olivia laughed through tears.
Every adult liar seemed to use that sentence.
Andrew looked at me.
“Michael wasn't innocent.”
“No.”
I surprised him.
“My husband cheated on me. He lied to me every day for fourteen years. Nothing you did changes that.”
Andrew nodded quickly.
“Exactly.”
“But he believed Caleb was his.”
Andrew's expression tightened.
