Racist Cops Jail the Wrong Driver—He’s the Chief of Police
Dorian Brooks had never imagined that working late would turn him into the husband of the most powerful CEO in the city. It started the way most disasters do, quietly without warning. One moment he was delivering a stack of financial reports to the executive floor. The next he was carrying Celeste Monroe down to the parking garage, her blood on his sleeve, her breathing shallow and wrong. He drove.
He didn't know what else to do. At the emergency room, nurses moved fast. A doctor appeared. Forms were pushed across a counter. What is your relationship to Ms.
Monroe? I work for her. They were about to ask him to leave. Then Celeste's hand reached out. Barely conscious, she pulled the admission form toward her and picked up a pen.
She wrote his name in the emergency contact field. Then in the box marked relationship to patient, she wrote a single word, husband. Dorian went completely still. Why would the wealthiest woman he had ever met, a woman who barely knew his name, hand that word to him? Dorian Brooks was not the kind of man anyone noticed.
That wasn't self-pity. It was just the truth. He was 36 years old, mid-level, reliable, the kind of employee whose name appeared on reports but never in meetings. He worked in financial controls at Monroe Capital, a firm that managed assets most people would never see in three lifetimes. His job was to find the numbers that didn't add up and make sure someone higher up the chain knew about it before regulators did.
I was good at it. He had never been promoted because of it. Every month, Dorian ran the same quiet math in the back of his mind. Rent on the two-bedroom apartment he shared with his daughter. Jade's tuition at the private elementary school, the one his late wife had chosen before she got sick, the one he refused to pull Jade out of because it was the last decision the two of them had made together.
Health insurance, the remaining balance on a loan he had taken out during his wife's final year of treatment. Groceries, the small, stubborn emergencies that showed up whenever he'd managed to save anything at all. I took extra shifts. He stayed late. He told himself it wouldn't always be like this.
On the nights he worked past 10:00, he always sent Jade the same message before he wrapped up still at the office. Leftover rice is in the fridge. Lock the door. She always responded with a single sleepyfaced emoji sometimes, too. He kept those texts.
He didn't know why. Monroe Capital's executive floor existed in a different atmosphere than the rest of the building. The carpet was thicker. The lighting was warmer. The air itself seemed to carry less weight, as though even the building understood that the people up here were not to be stressed.
Dorian had been on that floor fewer than a dozen times in 3 years. Each time he had the distinct sensation of walking into a place that did not entirely include him. Celeste Monroe was the reason the building existed at all. She had founded Monroe Capital at 31, bootstrapped it through two recessions, and expanded it into one of the most respected mid-market investment firms in the country. She was 41 now with the kind of reputation that preceded her into every room, cold, precise, and almost surgically effective.
People who worked for her did not describe her as warm. They described her as fair, which was considered high praise in her world. She had no husband, no children. Her parents had both passed, her father when she was in college, her mother 6 years ago. The relatives who remained had at various points all found reasons to be financially connected to her company.
She had noticed this. She had drawn her own conclusions. Celeste Monroe had spent the better part of 20 years operating from a single fixed belief. If someone needed your money, they would never truly love you. And because the circle of people around her was made entirely of people who needed or wanted or stood to inherit something from her wealth, she had stopped expecting love from any of them a long time ago.
She trusted contracts. She did not trust people. It worked mostly. It was a system. Systems did not disappoint.
It was 11:40 on a Tuesday when Dorian stepped off the elevator on the executive floor. He was carrying a bound set of quarterly risk reports that a senior analyst had forgotten to send up before leaving for the day. The delivery was minor. He could have left them at the reception desk, but the covering note said urgent executive review, and Dorian had never been the kind of man who passed urgent things to someone else. The floor was empty, only a few lights still on.
He moved past the glasswalled conference rooms, past the framed photographs of ribbon cutings and charitable gallas, past the name plaques of people he would never share an elevator with. He was almost at the reception station outside Celeste's office when he heard it. A heavy sound, something solid hitting the floor. He stopped. The sound came from inside her office.
He waited a beat, then two. Nothing followed. No voice, no movement, no second noise. He pushed open the heavy door. Celeste Monroe was on the floor behind her desk.
She was on her side, one hand pressed hard against her stomach, the other flat against the carpet as though she'd tried to catch herself and failed. Her face was the wrong color, gray, pale, stripped of everything that usually made her look formidable. There was blood at the corner of her mouth. Not a lot. Enough.
Dorian moved before he made a conscious decision to move. He was beside her in seconds, crouching down, already reaching for his phone. Ms. Monroe, can you hear me? I'm calling 911.
Her hand shot out and locked around his wrist with a grip that had no business being that strong given the rest of her. No. Her voice came out rough and compressed, like something forced through a narrowed space. No ambulance. You're bleeding.
Not from the outside. She closed her eyes briefly, then forced them open again. Tomorrow. There's an announcement tomorrow. If the hospital report surfaces before the market opens, she stopped, breathed through it, continued.
Roland will use it. He'll call an emergency board session. He'll say, "I'm incapacitated." Dorian knew who Roland Pierce was. Every employee at Monroe Capital knew who Roland Pierce was.
The man had been trying to restructure the firm's leadership for 2 years. A CEO hospitalization announced at the wrong moment would hand him exactly the leverage he needed. "Then I'll drive you," Dorian said. "No ambulance, no official dispatch, but you need a hospital." She looked at him like she was calculating something.
"Drive," she said. He didn't argue. He got one arm under her shoulders and lifted carefully. She was lighter than he expected, which somehow made it worse. He kept one hand at her back as they moved toward the elevator, then through the parking garage, then to the only car left on his level, a 5-year-old Honda sedan with a dent in the rear quarter panel and a jade-siz hoodie on the back seat.
He settled Celeste into the passenger seat and pulled out of the garage. On the highway, she started drifting. Hey. He reached over and put two fingers against her arm. Not hard, just enough contact to register.
