Racist Cops Jail the Wrong Driver—He’s the Chief of Police
If the story that reached Roland Pierce was that Celeste Monroe had a secret husband, a man no one on the board had ever heard of, a mid-level employee who had somehow ended up with medical decision-making authority over the CEO of an 11 billion firm. The conclusions Roland would draw were not going to be charitable ones. He would call it a conflict of interest. He would call it a manipulation of a vulnerable woman. He would call it grounds for an emergency board session.
Roland Pierce's lawyer arrived at the hospital at 3:15. I was a compact man in his 50s with a briefcase that looked like it had been packed in advance, as though he'd been waiting for an occasion like this. He presented Dorian with a document that used a great many words to say a simple thing. Relinquish the medical proxy. sign a statement clarifying that the admission form contained an error, leave the premises, and agree to have no further contact with Celeste Monroe outside of normal professional channels. In exchange, there would be no further inquiry into how Dorian had come to be alone with Celeste on the executive floor at midnight.
Dorian read it twice. Then he set it on the seat beside him and did not pick it up again. I'm not signing that. The lawyer's expression didn't change. Mr.
Brooks, you should understand that your current position could be characterized as she was dying. Dorian said, "I drove her to the hospital. She signed that form herself in front of staff while she was conscious. There's nothing in that document I need to respond to." He stood up, walked to the far end of the waiting room, and sat down with his back to the wall.
Nobody asked him to leave. The proxy held. Celeste came through surgery at 5:12 in the morning. The attending physician described it as a perforated gastric ulcer with significant hemorrhaging. The kind of thing that developed over months of sustained stress and inadequate nutrition, the kind of thing that a person ignored until they couldn't anymore.
He used the word manageable several times, which Dorian understood to mean serious, but she will live. When they they moved her to a recovery room, Dorian was the only one who stayed. Trevor had stepped out to make calls. Roland's lawyer had eventually left. The waiting room had emptied back down to its usual overnight configuration.
A handful of people in various states of exhaustion, the hum of fluorescent lights, the occasional announcement from a speaker that no one was listening to. Dorian sat in the chair beside Celeste's bed and waited. I wasn't sure why. He told himself it was because he was still holding the proxy form and didn't know where else to put it. He told himself it would be wrong to leave before he knew she was stable.
He told himself a number of things that were true but incomplete. She woke just after 7. She didn't say anything at first, just oriented herself, taking in the room, the equipment, the window showing gray early morning and then Dorian in the chair beside her. You stayed, she said. Her voice was rough from the intubation.
You gave me a form. He held it up briefly. Something moved across her face that wasn't quite a smile. She looked at the ceiling. Dorian waited another moment.
Then, "Why did you call me your husband?" The question landed flat and direct without apology. He wasn't angry. He wasn't accusing her. He just needed to understand it.
She was quiet for long enough that he thought she might not answer. Then she said, "Because if you were just an employee, they would have removed you inside of 20 minutes." "I know that part," he said. "I mean the other part." Another silence.
"I was on the floor," she said finally. "Behind my desk, I thought I wasn't sure I was going to make it to the door, let alone to a hospital, and I kept thinking about who I would call." She stopped, started again. I have the numbers of 462 people in my phone. Board members, investors, attorneys, people who have worked for me for a decade, she paused.
I went through all of them in my head while I was lying on that floor, and I couldn't think of a single person I could call who wasn't in some way for something from me. Dorian didn't say anything. You didn't ask me anything, she continued. You didn't ask if this would affect your job. You didn't ask what you would get for it.
You didn't take a photo. You just you picked me up. She looked at him for the first time since she'd started talking. I wrote that word because it was the only word that meant what I was trying to say. That you were behaving like someone who gave a damn whether I lived.
He didn't respond immediately. He looked at his hands, then out the window at the pale morning. I didn't call you my husband because I thought we were married, she said. I wrote it because you were the only person there behaving like family. It was the most honest thing he had ever heard her say.
And it moved something in him, shifted it. The way a weight shifts when a foundation settles. He felt the distance between them, which had always seemed not just professional but categorical, begin to close slightly. He didn't say anything about that. Neither did she.
But Celeste made note of how he looked when he heard it. And somewhere in the part of her mind that was always calculating, she filed it away. The way one files away a piece of information that might be useful later. That was her first mistake. By the second day, the story had started to move.
Someone at the hospital had talked, not about her condition, but about the admission form. The word husband had reached Roland Pierce's office by noon, and from there it had filtered down through the firm's internal networks with the particular speed of information that people pretend not to be sharing. By the time Trevor came to brief Celeste that afternoon, the narrative had already taken on a shape of its own. Trevor laid it out plainly. A preemptive denial would create more chaos than it resolved.
Roland's camp would use the confusion to push for an emergency board review of her capacity to lead. But if there was a story, a real one, or one that held together long enough to stabilize the situation, the whole thing became manageable. He slid a document across the tray table. It was a non-disclosure agreement. Attached to it was a number that represented a signing bonus and a contract addendum, elevating Dorian's position to a newly created senior advisory role, reporting directly to the CEO's office.
Celeste had called Dorian to the room before Trevor finished explaining. Dorian stood at the foot of the bed. He looked at the document on the tray table. He didn't pick it up yet. "What is this?"
he said. I need you to continue appearing in a capacity consistent with what was written on that form, Celeste said. Not permanently. A few weeks, long enough for Roland to lose the momentum he's building. You want me to pretend to be your husband?
I want you to help me control the narrative. He looked at the document again. And this was the moment Dorian Brooks came closest to signing something he should not have signed. I thought about Jade. He thought about the number at the bottom of the addendum.
And he thought about what that number could do. The loan balance gone. The school tuition covered. The monthly math he had been doing in the back of his mind every single month for 3 years simply gone. One signature and he could sleep through a whole night without running calculations.
His hand moved to the edge of the document. He stopped. He looked up at Celeste and realized something. She had not asked him how he felt about any of it. She had not asked him if this was something he could live with.
