But Lily’s reaction to that one word was not confusion.

It was recognition.

She had heard that tone before.

Michael stepped between Vanessa and his daughter.

“Where is the locket?”

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“Michael, you are ruining our wedding.”

“No.”

He held out his hand.

“You are going to give me my daughter’s necklace.”

The expression on Vanessa’s face hardened.

Then she reached into a hidden pocket along the side of her wedding gown.

When her hand emerged, a small silver heart-shaped locket rested in her palm.

The chain hung broken from one side.

Michael stared at it.

The locket had belonged to Emily.

His first wife.

Lily’s mother.

Inside it was not a photograph.

It was something far more precious.

A six-second recording.

Emily Carter’s voice.

“I love you to the moon and back, my Lily girl.”

Emily had recorded those words in a hospital room ten days before she died.

Lily had been three.

Too young to understand why her mother suddenly slept so much.

Too young to know what cancer was.

Too young to realize that the woman holding her every night would soon become a collection of photographs, stories, and memories everyone else seemed to possess more clearly than she did.

After Emily died, Michael stored the locket in a drawer for almost a year.

On Lily’s fifth birthday, he gave it to her.

She wore it only on important days.

The first day of kindergarten.

Her dance recital.

Christmas morning.

And today.

Because the previous night she had climbed onto Michael’s lap and whispered, “I want Mommy there too.”

Michael had kissed her forehead.

“Then she’ll be there.”

Now the locket lay broken in Vanessa’s hand.

Michael took it without speaking.

He pressed the tiny button inside.

Nothing happened.

The speaker was gone.

Lily still held it.

Michael stared at the broken chain.

He thought of Emily’s last week.

Her thin fingers fastening the necklace around her own neck before asking the nurse to help her sit up.

Her smile when she recorded the message.

The way she had made Michael promise never to force Lily to choose between remembering her mother and loving whoever might eventually come into their lives.

That conversation had happened at two in the morning.

Michael remembered every word.

“If someone loves her,” Emily had whispered, “she won’t need me erased first.”

For four years, he had believed he had honored that promise.

Now he wondered how badly he had failed.

“Michael.”

Vanessa’s voice pulled him back.

“I know what that necklace means to you.”

His eyes rose.

“No. You don’t.”

“It got caught.”

Lily’s voice came from behind him.

“She stepped on it.”

Vanessa went completely still.

Michael turned.

“What?”

Lily was crying again.

“She pulled it off. It fell. Then she stepped on it.”

Michael looked down at Vanessa’s white satin shoe.

Then back at the locket.

The silver casing carried a fresh dent.

The ballroom disappeared around him.

He heard only Lily.

“She said I needed to stop bringing a dead woman everywhere.”

Someone in the audience gasped.

Vanessa’s face changed.

“Lily.”
