Michael felt something settle inside him.

Not rage.

Certainty.

The wedding was over.

So was the relationship.

But the day was not finished hurting them.

Three hours later, Michael sat in a private hotel suite with his tuxedo jacket folded across a chair.

Lily slept beside Margaret in the adjoining room.

She had cried until exhaustion took over.

The wedding guests were gone.

The ballroom was being dismantled downstairs.

Michael’s phone contained 117 unread messages.

He ignored all of them.

His best friend, David Mercer, sat across from him.

David had been Michael’s college roommate and was supposed to be his best man.

“You want me to say something useful?” David asked.

Michael stared at the carpet.

“Yes.”

“I don’t have anything useful.”

“Then why are you here?”

“Because leaving you alone seems worse.”

Michael nodded.

Fair enough.

On the coffee table rested the broken locket.

Noah the videographer had carefully removed his camera’s memory card and given Michael a copy of the audio before leaving.

Michael had listened to it only once.

Once was enough.

David leaned forward.

“Mike.”

Michael looked up.

“Did Lily ever tell you Vanessa was treating her badly?”

The question made him feel sick.

“Not directly.”

“What does that mean?”

Michael rubbed both hands over his face.

“She said Vanessa didn’t like when she talked about Emily.”

“When?”

“Months ago.”

“And?”

“I asked Vanessa.”

David waited.

“She said Lily was having trouble adjusting.”

“And you believed her?”

Michael closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

There it was.

The part of the story Michael would never be able to place entirely on Vanessa.

He had missed things.

Or worse.

He had seen them and accepted explanations that were more comfortable.

Lily had stopped asking Vanessa to read bedtime stories.

Michael thought she was growing independent.

Lily had asked to move her framed photograph of Emily from her dresser to inside her closet.

She said she wanted to keep it safe.

Michael thought that was sweet.

Now he wondered whether somebody had complained about it.

Two months earlier, he found Lily sitting on the stairs after Vanessa left for work.

She asked, “Daddy, if you get a new wife, am I still your first family?”

Michael laughed gently and hugged her.

“Of course.”

He had not asked why she wondered.

That memory made him stand.

“I need to wake her.”

David looked toward the bedroom.

“She finally fell asleep.”

“I need to know.”

“Tonight?”

Michael stopped.

David was right.

Lily had spent the day carrying adults’ failures.

She did not owe him an immediate investigation.

Michael sat again.

The following morning, Lily woke at 6:12.

She came into Michael’s room carrying the pillow from the hotel bed.

He was awake.

He had never slept.
