The first thing Adrian Bennett saw when he stepped into his kitchen was his six-year-old daughter sitting on the marble floor.

The second thing he saw was the dog bowl in front of her.

It was the large stainless-steel bowl they used for Ranger, their eleven-year-old golden retriever. Brown pieces of dry dog food filled it almost to the rim.

Emma Bennett was crying so hard she could barely breathe.

Her long blond hair hung across her face. Both hands rested against her knees, and her small shoulders shook beneath a plain gray T-shirt.

Directly in front of her, Adrian’s wife Lauren was kneeling on one knee.

She had one hand braced against the marble floor and the other pointed toward the bowl.

“You are going to sit there until you learn what happens when you behave like an animal.”

Adrian stopped in the doorway.

For half a second, his mind rejected what his eyes were showing him.

Behind him, his business partner Jonathan Pierce nearly walked into his back.

“Adrian?”

Lauren turned.

Everything in her face changed.

The anger vanished so quickly it was almost frightening.

“Adrian.”

Emma looked toward the doorway.

Her eyes widened.

“Daddy!”

Adrian crossed the kitchen before Lauren could stand.

Emma scrambled toward him on her knees.

He dropped beside her and pulled her against his chest.

“What happened?”

Emma wrapped both arms around his neck.

“Daddy, please.”

Her entire body was trembling.

Adrian looked over her shoulder at Lauren.

She had risen now.

Her white silk blouse remained perfectly tucked into beige trousers. Her shoulder-length brown hair was smooth, her makeup untouched, her expression controlled.

Only her breathing revealed anything unusual.

Adrian looked at the bowl.

Then back at his wife.

“What is that?”

Lauren shook her head as though he had misunderstood something obvious.

“She had a tantrum.”

Adrian stared.

“What is the dog food doing there?”

“It is not what you think.”

“Then tell me what I think.”

Lauren crossed her arms.

“She threw her dinner on the floor.”

Emma immediately lifted her head.

“No, I didn’t!”

Lauren looked at her sharply.

Emma flinched.

Adrian felt it.

That tiny movement.

Almost nothing.

But a child did not recoil from a look without having learned something from it.

Adrian’s voice dropped.

“Look at me, Em.”

Emma did.

“Did you throw your dinner?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

Lauren sighed.

“Adrian, please do not reward lying.”

His eyes moved toward his wife.

“Don’t.”

“Excuse me?”

“Do not accuse her of lying while she is sitting in my arms terrified of you.”

Lauren laughed once.

“Terrified?”

Emma pressed her face into Adrian’s neck.

Lauren gestured toward her.

“She is performing because she knows you always take her side.”

Jonathan remained near the doorway.

Adrian had almost forgotten he was there.

The forty-one-year-old attorney and chief operating officer had come home with Adrian only because they were supposed to retrieve a contract from Adrian’s study before returning to downtown Boston for a meeting.

They should not have been home until after eight.

It was 4:46.

Adrian looked back at Jonathan.

Jonathan’s face had gone very still.

A witness.

The thought entered Adrian’s mind instinctively.

He hated himself for thinking legally before emotionally.

Then Emma whispered something against his shoulder.

“What?”

She lifted her face.

“She said I had to eat it.”

Adrian stopped breathing.

Lauren immediately shook her head.

“That is not what happened.”
