Then death.

The blue box went to the attic.

Lauren reappeared years later under a different surname.

And Adrian fell in love with her.

His stomach turned.

Jonathan was already calling someone.

“Who?”

“Our director of internal audit.”

“At night?”

“Yes.”

“I thought you said we shouldn’t invent connections.”

“We shouldn’t.”

Jonathan looked at the badge.

“We should verify them.”

By nine-thirty, they had.

Lauren Elena Bennett had been born Lauren Elena Whitaker.

She married a man named Charles Pierce nine years earlier and divorced him four years later.

Her employment history omitted Whitaker Procurement.

Instead, her résumé listed freelance supply-chain consulting during those years.

Matthew Whitaker still operated several businesses.

Two had current contracts with companies controlled indirectly by Lauren’s investment firm.

Jonathan put his phone down.

“She lied.”

Adrian stared at the table.

“Yes.”

“About knowing Hannah.”

“Yes.”

“And her work history.”

“Yes.”

Rose looked toward Emma, who had fallen asleep against Adrian.

“Why come back?”

No one answered.

The flash drive did.

Not immediately.

Jonathan insisted they duplicate it before opening anything.

He called a digital-forensics specialist from the company.

By midnight, the three adults sat in Adrian’s study while Emma slept upstairs beside Rose.

The drive contained spreadsheets.

Emails.

Scanned invoices.

Photographs.

And one audio file.

Hannah and Lauren.

The recording began with chairs moving.

Then Hannah’s voice.

“Lena, I want to believe you.”

Lauren answered.

“Then believe me.”

“You approved the invoices.”

“Because Matthew brought them.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

“I checked what I was given.”

“You approved the same consulting engagement against three separate projects.”

“I made a mistake.”

“A $480,000 mistake?”

Silence.

Then Lauren’s voice became colder.

“You think because your name is Bennett you understand everybody who works beneath you?”

Hannah replied, “This is not about class.”

“It always is.”

“It’s about documents.”

“Documents can say whatever people with money need them to say.”

Hannah sounded tired.

“Then help me understand.”

Lauren laughed.

“You already decided.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

Another silence.

Then Hannah said, “Did Matthew ask you to access the audit server?”

The recording ended.

No answer.

Adrian played it again.

Then a third time.

Jonathan stopped him before a fourth.

“You’re not going to find a different ending.”

Adrian stared at the computer.

“She knew Hannah.”

“Yes.”

“She looked me in the face an hour ago and said she didn’t.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Jonathan hesitated.
