“The third?” “I can’t afford what they quoted.”

Marcus stared at the concrete floor. A younger version of himself might have enjoyed the irony.

The man standing there only felt tired. “Send me photographs and measurements.”

Linda became silent. “You’ll help?”

“I’ll look at the job.” “Why?”

Marcus thought about Zoe. Then answered, “Because your father didn’t take my daughter’s chair.”

Linda started crying quietly. Marcus did not rush to rescue her from the feeling.

A week later he visited the house. Linda’s father, George, sat in a hospital wheelchair near the front window.

One side of his body remained weak. Linda hovered around him, adjusting blankets and moving cups closer.

Marcus watched the way she kept asking whether he needed anything. People were rarely only the worst thing they had done.

That did not erase anything. It simply made hatred less useful.

He designed a ramp. Charged the normal price.

No discount. No punishment.

Linda signed the contract. Before Marcus left, she stopped him at the door.

“I owe Zoe an apology.” Marcus nodded.

“Yes.” “Do you think she’d talk to me?”

“That’s Zoe’s decision.” Linda looked down.

“I understand.” This time, perhaps she did.

Zoe was sixteen when the letter arrived. Marcus placed the sealed envelope on the kitchen island.

“You don’t have to open it.” She looked at the handwriting.

“Linda?” “Yes.”

Zoe stared at it for almost a minute before tearing the envelope open. Linda did not blame stress.

Did not mention Brandon. Did not mention HOA politics.

She wrote about control. One sentence made Zoe stop.

I treated your wheelchair like an available object because that allowed me to ignore the fact that taking it meant taking your control over your own body.

Zoe read it again. Then folded the page.

Marcus waited. “Well?”

“She finally gets it.” “Do you forgive her?”
