She noticed the branch manager, Karen Voss, hovering near the back office rather than walking over, watching the scene unfold from a careful distance instead of stepping in. Loretta had spent 31 years reading rooms full of children who didn't want to admit what they'd done. Karen's stillness read the same way. Not confusion, but calculation. She noticed something else, too, though she wouldn't understand its weight until much later.
A laminated notice pinned to the community board by the door thanking Summit Trust customers for their patience during a routine compliance review scheduled for later that month. Ordinary words. She read them twice anyway, the way she read everything twice out of habit more than suspicion. Her phone buzzed a third time.
She let it ring out again, watching Brad process a white customer's transaction 2 ft away without so much as a glance at his ID. Not yet, she told herself. Whatever this cost her, she would pay it herself first.
She had no way of knowing that somewhere across town, a phone she still hadn't answered belonged to someone who was about to notice on her own that her mother wasn't picking up, and that Simone Banks had never once in her adult life let three unanswered calls pass without finding out why. The police officer who arrived offered Loretta a way out, though he didn't mean to. "Ma'am, if you've got someone who can vouch for the check, a manager, corporate, anyone, I'd call them now. Might speed this up," he said, not unkindly, glancing at his watch like he had somewhere else to be. Loretta understood exactly what he meant.
One name, one phone call to her daughter, and this would likely end within the hour. Brad reprimanded, the check processed. Karen Voss suddenly very apologetic. It would be easy. It would also mean the story of this morning became forever after the story of what happened when Simone Banks's mother got disrespected, not what happened when Loretta Banks stood her ground.
She thought of every student she'd ever taught to solve a problem the long way first, even when the short way sat right there in the back of the textbook. Understanding mattered more than the answer. She'd said that a thousand times to 8-year-olds. She wasn't about to abandon it at 67 in a bank lobby over a torn check.
"I don't need to call anyone," she told the officer. "I need someone here to look at what actually happened." He shrugged, the same shrug she imagined he gave a hundred small injustices a week, and said there wasn't much he could do if the bank itself refused to process a check it had issued.
Loretta nodded like she'd expected exactly that answer. She picked up the torn pieces from the counter, smoothed them flat against her purse, and photographed both halves with her phone. The tear line, the numbers, the date. Brad's name tag caught clearly in the frame. Evidence first. Everything else could wait.
Sitting on the bench outside the bank, Loretta finally looked at her phone. Three missed calls from Simone, a fourth one blinking now, live, insistent. She let it ring twice before answering, thumb hovering over the screen like it weighed more than it should. "Mama, why haven't you?"
"I'm fine," Loretta said too quickly, the way she always did when she wasn't sure that was true. "Just handling something at the bank. Don't worry about it."
Silence on the other end. The particular kind Simone had always been good at. Patient, unconvinced, waiting for her mother to finish deciding whether to say the rest. Loretta almost told her. The words sat right there ready.
A teller tore up your check and called the police on me. Six seconds from changing everything. One sentence and Simone would be in her car before Loretta finished the call. She knew that as certainly as she knew her own name.
